Thoughts on other sites

From tumblr to youtube to that tiny fandom-specific site you frequent; what are your thoughts on other fandom sites?

Vent, extol, rec, ask for opinions; anything you want

i don't think i'm alone in that i want tumblr to fall into irrelevancy and people to move on to the next platform

i also wish deviantart wasn't dead (and had better management) and oekakis were still a thing

Yes, I wish oekakis were still a thing, too.
I used to stare at oekaki replays for hours on end just for shits and giggles. Damn, I still don't think I wasted my time.

fail-fandomanon

Does anyone here go to that site? What kind of reputation does it have?

da

I, too, am curious. I looked for the first time last week and I'm not sure I understood it.

A pan-fandom anon meme.

There are threads that come up every post, like fic recs, things you wouldn't admit unanon, Tolkien, plot unfucking and so on. People just post a comment and others weigh in, start trolling, or have sensible discussions as the fancy takes them. Then there are threads that are one-offs, or only get posted infrequently.

Posts change over after 6000 comments, currently every day and a half or thereabouts. There's something called the pony line - the first few comments in each post get a critter of some sort, often a pony (or a seal, kraken or whatnot) in the replying mod's icon.

Hope that helps?

4chan >>>> tumblr

I'm pretty progressive if that matters.

I used to really hate Tumblr, but I love it now. I haven't been on Livejournal in months, and while I feel bad because I haven't been communicating with any of my LJ friends, I honestly don't feel entirely bad. Tumblr is just really working for me right now. And plus, while I've always been a multi-fandom girl, I've really become a one-fandom girl lately. I don't have the energy to be really into everything right now, and focusing on one thing has been really fun.

Experiences with imageboards? Not just 4chan, but it still applies.

Any favorites?

Love tumblr. Just got to know who to follow!

Love reddit. Just got to know what subreddits to subscribe to!

Love youtube. Just got to never read comments.

I love tumblr for quickly seeing what's going on in fandom (news, general opinions, etc) and the easy access to gifs and art makes me happy, but I do wish there was more discussion. I think my problem with tumblr is I could get to know people better (though it would take a lot more effort than, say, here on DW), but I'm hesitant to try. (I don't want to piss anyone off. I've heard so many horror stories that I'm scared to talk to people.) Also, it's way too hard for me to leave once I log on. My queue is insane...

Youtube is great, but youtube comments are often the devil. I still find myself reading them, and often curse myself afterwards. Every once in a while I'll get a good chuckle out of them, though.

Reddit...depends on the subreddit. Haven't visited in a while, but the Dragon Age subreddit was near perfect.

Don't be too afraid to try talking to people on tumblr! Seriously. Most folks are pretty chill (of course, that could be a fandom-dependent thing...).

The thing that can be difficult about it is that, often, you really have to be persistent. You've got to send multiple asks over time and comment regularly on their posts to get anywhere, which is admittedly kind of annoying.

I've only recently started replying to a post or two, but mostly when someone asks a question I can answer. I want to jump into discussion but find it intimidating! IMO you're right in that a bit of it is fandom dependent, but I've been in plenty of fandoms and I know that even in the 'worse' ones there are plenty of decent people, you just have to find them.

I certainly don't think that everyone and anyone rages over the smallest detail, but know it CAN happen and I'm paranoid. I'm not even the sort that typically says anything controversial or offensive (as far as I know, lol), but still I worry.

You've got to send multiple asks over time and comment regularly on their posts to get anywhere, which is admittedly kind of annoying.

Yea, that's the thing...it's a lot of energy and kind of difficult to keep track of, you know? At least in comparison to DW. Even if you have similar interests, the pace on tumblr can be crazy and unless the person in question tags rather extensively it can be hard to find anything or keep up.

Plus, if a person doesn't post much themselves (like me, lol; I almost never ever post) there's not much to talk about...unless you want to randomly ask them about their feelings on -so and so-.

Have you made friends on tumblr? How long have you been at it?

Yeah, it's definitely more difficult than it was/is on other platforms. And, really, I think starting a conversation with someone who's prolific is as difficult as starting one with someone who rarely posts, because there's that chance you're going to get lost in the shuffle. It's like you've got to find someone who's sort of in between.

I've been active for about a year, perhaps a bit less, and I've managed to make a few friends in that time. All but one are people whom I deliberately sought out; the other approached me first. It took a while to get beyond being mutual followers who commented on/liked each other's posts, however, and I wish it wasn't that way (I also wish you could send fan mail to non-mutuals! I don't understand why tumblr management thinks that restriction is a good idea). It was nice when everything was forum-based, and you could jump into a lively, ongoing conversation and have a few acquaintances within a week or so.

You know, I didn't even realize you couldn't send fan mail to non-mutuals...I don't think I've ever used that feature. How is it different from an ask? (Is it always private?) I don't know as much about tumblr as I should, lol.

I guess if I'm going to make any friends on tumblr I have to be more forthcoming with people. I'll consider it.

(You raise a good point though. I've seen prolific people reply to asks and sometimes they can seem a bit impersonal, you know? Maybe they get so many that they don't have time for anything else.)

Re: Thoughts on other sites

[personal profile] a_potato 2015-08-18 01:22 pm (UTC)(link)
It is always private, and it doesn't have a character limit (or, if it does, I've never reached it), so you can have far more in-depth conversations through it. I feel like it would make it easier to develop acquaintances if it were allowed between non-mutuals, since it fosters a more organic back-and-forth.

Then again, people seem to like things short and sweet these days, so maybe it wouldn't make a difference, heh.

But yeah, give it a try! It can't hurt. It's just...weird. Really, really weird.

Although my fandom is a youtube one, I never considered youtube a fandom site. It's just where my show is, and the comments are trash, so all fandoming takes place elsewhere

I like tumblr for art and gifs, the layout works for it but when it comes to discussions it's somewhat clunky for that.

I'm not sure I'd consider youtube as a fandom site but I like it for music and cat videos, I never venture into the comments for that way lies madness.

I like Ao3 and ff.net, they've both got features I like and features I dislike, and I'll continue using both for my fic finding purposes(hell depending on the fandom/ship I'll have more luck on ff.net).

I check out a few reddit subthreads but I'm a bit clueless when it comes to navigating that site(I tend to just stick to threads that have been linked here).

(Anonymous) 2015-08-14 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
We've had a few discussions on this topic lately, and I've been thinking about it as a result, and I've come to the following conclusion.

AO3 is better than FFN in basically every way, as a platform. It's simply and clearly superior. As a site for publishing fanfiction.

The only reason anyone still uses FFN is some combination of emotional & time investment, and resentment towards AO3 and the people who use it. Which is fine, I guess, do what you want, but I don't see any reason we should have to pretend that AO3 isn't basically just a much better way to host fanfiction than FFN, because it is.

Re: Thoughts on other sites

(Anonymous) 2015-08-14 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
Who is this "we" you keep referring to? Because it certainly isn't me.

AO3 is great for looking up very specific content tags. FFN is great if I just want to browse a genre for works prominently featuring a specific ship or character. Because people on AO3 seem to tag everyone who makes even the briefest of brief appearances.

For the most part I like them. There will always be drama but I enjoy the good things.

I'm sad though, because my favorite OTP in my favorite tiny fandom had a mini outbreak of wank between two bnf artists whose work I both adore. I feel like I should do something positive, but part of me just doesn't want to get involved at all because right now a lot of people are taking sides. :( I thought we were over this kind of thing. It wasn't over any particular site, the fight extended through several places and resulted in one person deleting their art.

Tumblr - I have heard so many bad things that I still refuse to get an account. The only thing I regularly look at there is the DA Confessions blog.

YouTube - Easily addictive, but I get mildly irritated at commenters, especially people constantly yelling "Abuse!" at cat videos.

LJ - Sentimental fondness, but the place is almost dead.

FFN - Has it's faults but for some fandoms it's the best place to hunt for fics, due to sheer size.

AO3 - Not bad, easier to comment on, but not as easy to search on than FFN. Some fandoms have virtually no presence there.

Twitter - sometimes fun, sometimes boring as hell. Depends on one's follow list and how attached to the people on it one is.

Facebook - I barely understand the place.

killed my tumblr last week, after locking myself out for over a month.
