I love tumblr for quickly seeing what's going on in fandom (news, general opinions, etc) and the easy access to gifs and art makes me happy, but I do wish there was more discussion. I think my problem with tumblr is I could get to know people better (though it would take a lot more effort than, say, here on DW), but I'm hesitant to try. (I don't want to piss anyone off. I've heard so many horror stories that I'm scared to talk to people.) Also, it's way too hard for me to leave once I log on. My queue is insane...

Youtube is great, but youtube comments are often the devil. I still find myself reading them, and often curse myself afterwards. Every once in a while I'll get a good chuckle out of them, though.

Reddit...depends on the subreddit. Haven't visited in a while, but the Dragon Age subreddit was near perfect.

Don't be too afraid to try talking to people on tumblr! Seriously. Most folks are pretty chill (of course, that could be a fandom-dependent thing...).

The thing that can be difficult about it is that, often, you really have to be persistent. You've got to send multiple asks over time and comment regularly on their posts to get anywhere, which is admittedly kind of annoying.

I've only recently started replying to a post or two, but mostly when someone asks a question I can answer. I want to jump into discussion but find it intimidating! IMO you're right in that a bit of it is fandom dependent, but I've been in plenty of fandoms and I know that even in the 'worse' ones there are plenty of decent people, you just have to find them.

I certainly don't think that everyone and anyone rages over the smallest detail, but know it CAN happen and I'm paranoid. I'm not even the sort that typically says anything controversial or offensive (as far as I know, lol), but still I worry.

Yea, that's the thing...it's a lot of energy and kind of difficult to keep track of, you know? At least in comparison to DW. Even if you have similar interests, the pace on tumblr can be crazy and unless the person in question tags rather extensively it can be hard to find anything or keep up.

Plus, if a person doesn't post much themselves (like me, lol; I almost never ever post) there's not much to talk about...unless you want to randomly ask them about their feelings on -so and so-.

Have you made friends on tumblr? How long have you been at it?

Yeah, it's definitely more difficult than it was/is on other platforms. And, really, I think starting a conversation with someone who's prolific is as difficult as starting one with someone who rarely posts, because there's that chance you're going to get lost in the shuffle. It's like you've got to find someone who's sort of in between.

I've been active for about a year, perhaps a bit less, and I've managed to make a few friends in that time. All but one are people whom I deliberately sought out; the other approached me first. It took a while to get beyond being mutual followers who commented on/liked each other's posts, however, and I wish it wasn't that way (I also wish you could send fan mail to non-mutuals! I don't understand why tumblr management thinks that restriction is a good idea). It was nice when everything was forum-based, and you could jump into a lively, ongoing conversation and have a few acquaintances within a week or so.

You know, I didn't even realize you couldn't send fan mail to non-mutuals...I don't think I've ever used that feature. How is it different from an ask? (Is it always private?) I don't know as much about tumblr as I should, lol.

I guess if I'm going to make any friends on tumblr I have to be more forthcoming with people. I'll consider it.

(You raise a good point though. I've seen prolific people reply to asks and sometimes they can seem a bit impersonal, you know? Maybe they get so many that they don't have time for anything else.)

It is always private, and it doesn't have a character limit (or, if it does, I've never reached it), so you can have far more in-depth conversations through it. I feel like it would make it easier to develop acquaintances if it were allowed between non-mutuals, since it fosters a more organic back-and-forth.

Then again, people seem to like things short and sweet these days, so maybe it wouldn't make a difference, heh.

But yeah, give it a try! It can't hurt. It's just...weird. Really, really weird.

I just learned today that I was wrong! You CAN send fan mail to non-mutuals; you just have to wait a few days after following the person before it will let you.

Joy!

That's so odd! I wonder why there's a delay.

I suppose on one hand if a person wants to harass a user at least that person can't do it by fan mail without first waiting, and I imagine giving some thought to it. So hopefully anyone considering doing something like that would rethink their actions, but I doubt
tumblr had that in mind...lol.

Oh well, thanks for informing me!
