I've mentioned this before, but considering it's relevant to the thread at hand...

I'll go ahead and admit that it is exceedingly petty of me (and I already made a secret about it) but when Nichelle Nichols talked about Spock/Uhura during her reddit convo, it made me so happy. For so long, a couple of Spuhura fans kept throwing her quotes in my face about the pairing.

And the entire time, I kept thinking "Yes, I know they couldn't be together in the 60s due to racism." and "Yes, I know that Nichelle is supportive, especially of Zoe, but that doesn't change that I find the pairing HORRIBLY written and would rather ship other people since I find it so darn unconvincing."

It's just nice for them to realize that what pairings appeal to us is pretty much outside of our control and we'll ship it regardless of what celebrities say. Nichelle not being completely 100% positive of the ship is hardly going to stop THEM from shipping Spuhura after all.

Eh, do as you will, but considering that she'd just had a stroke, and the AMA itself says "(Her friend, Gil, is here actually writing up Nichelle's responses)." I'm still taking it with a grain of salt, especially considering the actual videos we have of Nichelle being pro Spock/Uhura.

See, I find this odd because it's kind of...insulting to Nichelle's friends. Do people really think that Nichelle's friends would make shit up? And that Nichelle would be okay with that?

Not intentionally, no, but could I believe that a friend would

- summarize Nichelle's thoughts poorly/incorrectly
- miss out on some nuance that Nichelle would have meant (as a joke, etc.)
- with the best intentions, believe the know what Nichelle means/wants

Yep! Especially based on my experience with family members who had strokes. The difference between what caregivers genuinely thought they wanted/meant and what the person actually wanted/meant when given a way to express themselves was eye opening.

You really don't think that her friend would have read the typed answer BACK to her though?

I mean, her friend was clearly asking Nichelle the questions and then typing up her responses. I see no reason why, if Nichelle could understand the questions and answer to them that she couldn't correct her friend in any response.

Plus, I mean, her responses are STILL on reddit. It's not like it would be difficult to go back and clarify if she really had an issue. Especially since that response was one of her most upvoted AND she answered a follow-up question.

The follow-up question, especially, makes me really doubt that she was improperly transcribed considering the person said:

"Thanks so much for the response! I've always thought it felt ham-fisted. It's nice to know you agree."

I mean...the person basically said "Thanks for agreeing that it's ham-fisted." and that's what Nichelle responded to.

I could believe it, tbh. Like I said, even people with good intentions...

Until Nichelle is on film again and repeats what she said on Reddit, I don't feel too bad about not taking her AMA as 100% gospel. There are too many layers until you get back to her, vs. the videos where she's front and center, and the one speaking. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The follow-up question though makes it REALLY hard for me to believe that she wasn't okay with what was conveyed.

Either way, it's nice for me because at least now Spuhura fans will know what it feels like.

Lets be honest. You just really don't want it to be true and you are rationalizing.

Whereas the people who believe that this negates all of Nichols' past statements about Spock/Uhura because they dislike the ship and like seeing its fans upset have no ulterior motive?

If people like OP, who no doubt has ulterior motives, can take the reddit chat at face value all the while ignoring anything else she said, I don't think it's pathetic or reaching for other fans take that comment with a grain of salt because it really does sound over the top contraddictory with everything she had said before.

That 'any serious fan' comment is not like her, sounds more like one of the overzealous fanboys that post on trek fanboards, tbh. I think that made people suspect it wasn't really her and her friend was overstepping a bit.

you are free to take the comment at face value but others are free to take it with a grain of salt and it's quite reasonable for them to do that since it really does sound over the top contraddictory with everything she had said before.
Nichelle is unlikely to get back there and read everything and make corrections anyway. Idk if you know it but she doesn't even write over her own twitter account and she once said she didn't like to use computers, and that was before the stroke.

I'm sorry but I think it's shitty you take this comment at face value but apparently don't think that videos with her saying the opposite thing count as that being her opinion?

I find it more insulting for NICHELLE that people like OP, and the rest of the spirk fans out there, didn't care about her opinions when she said she liked spock/uhura and new uhura, or when she mentioned the racism she experienced while doing the series, and her being unhappy her character never got a relationship and/or uhura getting crappy writing, yet NOW that she had a stroke and couldn't write her own comments and had someone doing a poor summary of what she said for her, want to parade that one comment around as a fact because that one comment agrees with them.
Not to even mention those who use the excuse that she was a liar in the many, many, comments she has made pro the new movies and the relationship.

So now that you got a comment you approve we must consider what actors say as the gospel of trufax about the movies? Seems legit. God forbid someone calls you a hypocrite for that, nonny..after all, when both Nimoy and Nichols approved the romance, you just ignored that and you didn't like people posting those quotes in, no doubt, replies to s/u bashing (especially of the 'jj pulled it out of his ass! It's against canon!' and 'talking on the original actors behalf' kind) yet, you now want to use the AMA comment, not even written by Nichols herself, to validate your opinions.

Yeah, just like Zachary Quinto and some tos writers despising spirk, and the fact that it isn't canon, doesn't stop you guys from shipping that all the while preaching about what is 'canon' or 'out of character' with aos S/U fans?
Or like the fact that a suspicious amount of aos spirk fans now ship scotty/uhura and preach about it being tos canon, never mind the fact that it isn't and Nichols herself had said that they were just friends and uhura had no relationship.

Tl dr: you are a perfect human being without ulterior motives and s/u fans have to care about stuff that neither you nor the rest of the people in your corner of fandom give a damn about all the time.
Tl dr (second version): Hating on the canon ship and being petty with this nonsense rivalry with other fans still won't make your ship canon.
