Sure, it's not nice to laugh at others' misfortune, but we're all a bit petty sometimes so whatever. Have there ever been times in fandom when certain fans got smacked down hard and it made you cackle in glee (whether it's because their ship got sunk, their favorite character died, or some piece of popular fanon just plain got destroyed by actual canon, etc.)?

I enjoyed watching all the people told off about the whole, "Natasha's character in A:AOU thinks she is a monster cuz she can't have babies!!!"

No. That was not it. And more eloquent people than me were able to explain that apparently some audience members either completely ignored Bruce's whole bit or completely misunderstand how empathy works.

I completely agree. There were plenty of reasons to dislike the movie, but that one was just stupid. People wanted to see the worst in that conversation, but in my opinion, Natasha was talking about how her training and actions made her feel like a monster, not her infertility.

See, I don't think they meant it to mean that. But the wording was really badly written, which is unusual for Whedon. Better word choices could have conveyed the intended message of that scene better.

Eh, I disliked the conversation quite a bit. But, I think that sort of comes from the fact that, in the comics at least, she never quite expresses any negative feelings towards being infertile.

And yeah, I get that film =/= comics, but Widow seems the character that is the most removed from her comic self (except maybe Hawkeye, but he just hardly spoke until A:AoU), and she was the only female hero until Wanda,so yeah, I sort of get the being pissy about making her angst be about not being able to have babies.

For me it was just such a weirdly worded converstation all-around, like I didn't think they meant to imply that not being able to have kids was the worst thing that the Red Room did to her, but it did come off that way to me a bit the first time I saw it.

Either way that and Bruce/Nat were not the things that annoyed me the most in AoU and I forgot about it until fandom exploded on those points more than anything else.

I've mentioned this before, but considering it's relevant to the thread at hand...

I'll go ahead and admit that it is exceedingly petty of me (and I already made a secret about it) but when Nichelle Nichols talked about Spock/Uhura during her reddit convo, it made me so happy. For so long, a couple of Spuhura fans kept throwing her quotes in my face about the pairing.

And the entire time, I kept thinking "Yes, I know they couldn't be together in the 60s due to racism." and "Yes, I know that Nichelle is supportive, especially of Zoe, but that doesn't change that I find the pairing HORRIBLY written and would rather ship other people since I find it so darn unconvincing."

It's just nice for them to realize that what pairings appeal to us is pretty much outside of our control and we'll ship it regardless of what celebrities say. Nichelle not being completely 100% positive of the ship is hardly going to stop THEM from shipping Spuhura after all.

Eh, do as you will, but considering that she'd just had a stroke, and the AMA itself says "(Her friend, Gil, is here actually writing up Nichelle's responses)." I'm still taking it with a grain of salt, especially considering the actual videos we have of Nichelle being pro Spock/Uhura.

So now that you got a comment you approve we must consider what actors say as the gospel of trufax about the movies? Seems legit. God forbid someone calls you a hypocrite for that, nonny..after all, when both Nimoy and Nichols approved the romance, you just ignored that and you didn't like people posting those quotes in, no doubt, replies to s/u bashing (especially of the 'jj pulled it out of his ass! It's against canon!' and 'talking on the original actors behalf' kind) yet, you now want to use the AMA comment, not even written by Nichols herself, to validate your opinions.

Yeah, just like Zachary Quinto and some tos writers despising spirk, and the fact that it isn't canon, doesn't stop you guys from shipping that all the while preaching about what is 'canon' or 'out of character' with aos S/U fans?
Or like the fact that a suspicious amount of aos spirk fans now ship scotty/uhura and preach about it being tos canon, never mind the fact that it isn't and Nichols herself had said that they were just friends and uhura had no relationship.


Tl dr: you are a perfect human being without ulterior motives and s/u fans have to care about stuff that neither you nor the rest of the people in your corner of fandom give a damn about all the time.
Tl dr (second version): Hating on the canon ship and being petty with this nonsense rivalry with other fans still won't make your ship canon.

I wish. I've never seen a truly awful person in fandom who was capable of recognizing a loss condition. No matter how badly their arguments fail, they always convince themselves they're the voice of sanity and anyone who disagrees with them is wrong.

I've felt this kind of thing a lot because I'm kind of an asshole, but there's one Sterek fandom incident that still cracks me up. A few years ago (I think it was either during season 2 or maybe shortly before season 2 premiered, I can't remember) Teen Wolf was nominated for some kind of Teen's Choice Awards type thing and the fandom, especially the Sterek portion of it, campaigned super hard to get people to vote online for the show.

The show's cast/producers, who are smart enough to know how to manipulate its fandom, released a Sterek-y promotional video to encourage people to vote as well. Because of the video, a ton of Sterek fans were convinced that if the show won the award, then Davis would premier another Sterek video at the awards show, possibly make Sterek canon in the actual show, or would at least get O'Brien and Hoechinchin (I don't remember his name but you know who I mean) to make out on the awards stage. Anyway, when the night of the awards show finally came people were practically creaming themselves in anticipation as they sat through a bunch of shitty performances and awards for categories they didn't care about and waited for their "promised Sterek...and waited. When there was five minutes of the awards show left and Teen Wolf's category still hadn't been announced, people in the Sterek tag began posting that they were probably saving the category for the very end as a big finale.

Buuuuuut it turned out that Teen Wolf's category was one of the categories that wasn't even going to be announced on television. People in the Sterek tag were devastated. At first, people began accusing the awards show of a conspiracy, then they turned on Teen Wolf itself and accused David of queerbaiting without "rewarding" them with more Sterek, and then they just got really, really sad and started posting videos of themselves crying about Sterek (like, literally crying. Tears everywhere). It was pretty funny.

It didn't delight me, but I can't say I didn't laugh when Peter and Claire in Heroes turned out to be related. (I had seen some Peter/Claire fans talk about how Peter/Nathan was disgusting, then, well... Not the same thing, but still kind of ironic.)

The Sasu/Saku fans during the recent gaiden. Watching them implode in horrified denial that Karin was Sarada's mother was one of the most hilarious thing's I've seen from that fandom.

I saw one tumblr post where someone analyzed every drop of sweat on Sakura's face in one chapter, cross referencing other sweat drops Kishimoto had drawn on her and other characters to prove Sakura was really the mother.

I was a little disappointed they got the Sasu/Saku baby in the end. It would have been so much more fun if Sarada had been a clone of Sasuke from Karin Orochimaru had made or something.
