Yeah, I have no fucking idea.

Sucks to be you. It appeals to a lot of people and the fact that you can't understand that is on you. Don't harsh on us for liking it. Shut up and ignore it.

I don't like Star Wars either. It would not be so bad if most the podcasts I listen to were not hosted by huge fans. Also, get a new fucking trailer. Sick of watching the same one over and over.

I liked the original trilogy to some extent, but between the second trlogy and the various duck moves by Lucas, my enthusiasm has faded even more than the cardboard cutout of Darth Vader we thumbtacked to the wall in the garage.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-15 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
It's nice that you're not a dick about what other people like, OP! ;)

(Anonymous) 2015-08-15 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I second the sentiment- yes, Star Wars is important to people, it's makin' lots of money, there are a lotta fans and deep lore, etc etc BUT! I think it's been milked a bit too long and needs to be put to rest. I'm tired of it too, and I've only really seen one movie myself- it's just EVERYWHERE, and the whole idea that being a SW fan is the foundation of liking any sci-fi/fantasy, or that if you're a "nerd" you automatically like that and/or Star Trek is tiresome.

In my personal experience, the entire franchise has become annoying, and on a bad day comes off as the dead horse beaten deep enough into the earth to warrant shoving dirt over it and calling it a grave. On a good day, it's just annoying to hear about. Mind you, I'm not criticizing the writing or special effects or quality of the movies or shows or comics or anything else- there's just.... too much. For too long, FAR too long.

Make it stop.

You must be making an effort to be exposed to it, because I find Star Wars build up easy to ignore. I don't want to know the whole movie before hand, so I don't look for information, I scroll past articles about it, and so forth. I'm remarkably unspoiled, and unsaturated. You should try it.

btw, you sound really bitter and cranky. Lighten Up!

intrigueing: (yoda's epic shit)

[personal profile] intrigueing 2015-08-15 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a big Star Wars fan and to be quite honest, I absolutely love that it's everywhere. I'm basking in it. But I totally understand this sentiment, OP. I already feel bitter that my other fandoms aren't as lucky as Star Wars fandom is -- I can only imagine how much more bitter I'd feel if I wasn't even a fan of Star Wars.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-15 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not a Star Wars fan either. I can appreciate that the first three were something really new and epic and awesome when they came out. I can even appreciate that they've held up surprisingly well over time. And yeah, I guess they're fairly fun. But that's where my appreciation ends. The atrociousness of the second trilogy should have killed the franchise then and there, but unfortunately, it's become sort of a money zombie, lumbering onward because some audience poll somewhere told some producers that further Star Wars endeavors would still make bank.

That said, I tend to be the sort of fan who enjoys other people's fannish enthusiasm, whether I get where it's coming from or not.

This secret kinda baffles me. I like the original trilogy of Star Wars, but i'm not into the fandom - it's just a nostolgia/child hood thing for me. Hate the other stuff. Hate Dr. Who, which is just as big, I'd say, as Star Wars.

And yet....

I'm not pissed off and exhausted and *hands* over the fandoms. I don't interact with people who are *only* into those fandoms (what's the point?) and I don't follow journals or Tumblrs that are only into those fandoms, and I can blackbox those tags if I want (and do, for Dr. Who).

I...don't get the big deal. It's only in your face, maybe, in real life (cons) and if you're going to places where a lot of those fans hang out. My Tumblr feed is pretty much devoid of both. Try better filters, anon, 'cause...it's just not that big a deal.

I think a big reason as to why it's still successful is that they're movies you can show kids. My parents showed it to me when I was little, my sister is doing the same thing with my nephews. There's an always renewing fanbase.

I can sympathize to some extent, what with the series that you are automatically supposed to like because you say you're a geek. I really fucking hate Game of Thrones and everything about it, but as a fantasy fan, not only does everyone freak out if you say that, but GoT shit is all over the damn place. I suppose like Star Wars it's sort of "mainstream acceptable", which means it's infected areas that aren't even supposed to be "geeky".

Since I passively enjoy Star Wars, the continued hype there doesn't bother me. But I suppose with the new movie coming out, it'll be in headlines all the time.

Oh gosh people like what I don't like

(Anonymous) 2015-08-15 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe it's not the fact you aren't interested in Star Wars as much as it is your stinky attitude? If people are into it, big deal. If people give you shit about not being into it, tell them to fuck themselves and move on to your next thought.

I'm still into the original trilogy over 30 years later (and after that picture of Mark Hamill dressed Obi-Wan style, I'm actually looking forward to the new movies). It has never occurred to me to harass anybody for daring to not like anything tied to Star Wars.

I don't have much problem avoiding it, but then I also am mostly just ambivilent towards the whole series(I like the movies well-enough but I don't care about looking into fandom for it) so I probably don't notice it the way someone who isn't a fan would.

Between tumblr savior, liberally unfollowing people on various platforms and a carefully honed ability to roll my eyes or grimace and page down, I have managed to ignore the neverending stream of Star Wars and Star Trek.

Granted in ...what is it, December? This is probably going to get harder at FS so I may just flounce out for a month or so and spend time elsewhere.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-15 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
As someone who sort of outgrew Star Wars, I agree, it's annoying. I guess it's something people like to feel like they belong to.

OK

(Anonymous) 2015-08-15 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
We'll get rid of all the Star Wars stuff. In exchange, either Star Trek or Doctor Who has to go as well.

I wish people would stop taking it as a personal insult that I don't like the Star Wars movies. When I say I don't like them, I make it perfectly clear that it's just my own taste and that I understand if others have different taste and that's fine. But more often than not, they act like I just pissed on their living room carpet in front of their grandmother or something.

People practically fall over in shock when I say I only ever watched parts of them when I was a kid in the 1980s.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-16 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
I am a huge fan of the original trilogy, and rewatch it every few years. But I'm happy enough pretending that every other aspect of the IP never happened. I wouldn't take them away from anyone who loves them, but they have no place in my fictional consumption.
