Pre-Obama, one of the stock ways to establish "this is an alternate universe set in current day" was to have the PotUS be black.

Post-Obama, one of the stock ways to establish "this is an alternate universe set in current day" is to have the PotUS be white.

Is it bad one way but not the other?

When I tried to think of media that uses black presidents, all that came to mind was pre-Obama things.

What we need now is non-white and non-black presidents.

Yeah, now that I think about it I don't think I've ever seen an asian, hispanic, indian, etc president on on a tv show (I mean, I'm guessing there must be some examples out there, but none are coming to mind immediately)

I know the construction of race in America is different, but from a European perspective, the idea that a man whose mother was Irish (and white) and whose father was from Galicia (also white, and where the bulk of the population could be dumped in Ireland or Scotland and would blend right in) is a POC is just really, really hard to get your head around.

(And yes, I know that Martin Sheen adopted a stage name because of anti-Hispanic prejudice (and now regrets it). I also know that Europeans have certain constructions of race that are equally weird. It still doesn't compute for me).

He's a white hispanic, but it doesn't mean he's not hispanic. And considering the job was given to him in America from an American creator, the European perspective has no relevance.

I'm just saying it seems odd. It's always struck me as a good example of how constructed racial categories are, though.

a lot of Latin people look whiter because the Spanish gene is more dominant. If the Indian gene is more dominant they will look darker and shorter. I know how obvious this sounds.

I've still got the whole series on my shelf somewhere. It was a fun series, especially with the explanations of the American political process for Japanese readers who may or may not have any idea about what goes on here.

I also can't help but think that we'd be much better off now if Yamaoka had really won the 2000 election...

Jimmy Smitts was a lawmaker, presidential candidate and eventual president on The West Wing. And Edward James Olmos was a member of the Supreme Court.

I wouldn't count "Supreme Court" type characters in this. It's easy enough for shows to tick minority boxes in those roles.

Apparently it isn't, because it is so absurdly rare to see a fictional president in Western media (of America/etc, or a fictional society like America/etc) who isn't white or black.

I mean, I agree. But I also think it'd be easy to have female roles represent 50% of leads, and non-white (non-black as well) leads also consistently represented. But Hollywood doesn't think it's easy, apparently, and has a default to uphold.

Pre-Obama we had Morgan Freeman as POTUS in Deep Impact.

Post-Obama we had Samuel L. Jackson as POTUS in Big Game.

I think that says something about the US as a nation.
