And that's where Pixels lost me. I could suspend my disbelief enough to accept that the world was being attacked by 80's video game characters, but asking me to buy Paul Blart as the president was just too much.

Well, if they want to show the president as a conspirator or a murdering psycho or just a generally nasty, bigoted person, I can see why they might not want to cast a black man or a woman or another POC/WOC. We've had loads of white, male presidents, so having a white actor wouldn't be singling any of them out. But having a black president or a woman president might be perceived as making a political statement (either on Obama, or Hillary Clinton, or just the prospect of a female or POC president, etc.)

I get what you're saying. I don't think it's obviously fair, but I think writers will worry about unintentionally making an Obama (or Hillary) statement... and to some extent, I can believe that audiences actually would make that jump.

Of course, that's largely because seeing a black man or woman in a president role is still so unusual in Hollywood that it stands out, and some people will automatically make connections because of that. I know there have been black Presidents in Hollywood films before, mostly before Obama, but even then, I think writers expected audiences to find that unusual.

To be fair, though, a president with a Texan accent is almost definitely going to be associated with Bush, too.

Pre-Obama, one of the stock ways to establish "this is an alternate universe set in current day" was to have the PotUS be black.

Post-Obama, one of the stock ways to establish "this is an alternate universe set in current day" is to have the PotUS be white.

Is it bad one way but not the other?

When I tried to think of media that uses black presidents, all that came to mind was pre-Obama things.

Post-Obama we had Samuel L. Jackson as POTUS in Big Game.

I think that says something about the US as a nation.

We have had 44 presidents, one of which has been black. I expect the next one will be white, so if by lazy, you mean realistic, okay. How about we talk about why there aren't more fictional (or, hell, real life) female presidents. Or how about Latino/a presidents? Asian? Native American?

I think what OP is asking for it to reflect the current president if it's actually modern day America. So, a black person is in power therefore they should have a black person as president on TV instead of white, because it feels like it's ignoring that, yes, a black person made it into the White House.
