How do you refer to your SO when talking to others?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-19 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
So I was having this discussion with someone earlier today, and they were saying how if you're 30+ and in a relationship but not married there's not anything acceptable that you can call the person you're with. "Significant other" sounds awkward to them, "partner" sounds too business-like and "boyfriend/girlfriend" are "immature".

I know plenty of plenty of people who say SO and partner, and I know a couple in their 40s who refer to each other as boyfriend and girlfriend and it's never sounded weird to me, but I'm curious what other people thought. In the past I've just gone with boyfriend, but I was younger, so I'm not sure what I'll call them if/when I'm dating but not married in my 30s.

What do you guys call your SO/partner/whatever? Do you think certain terms are weird, and does it depend on age?

My great aunt refers to the guy she dates as her "special man friend" and it cracks me up. I think that's boyfriend-equivalent if you're 80.

I'm single as fuck, but I dislike being called a girlfriend. I don't have any good reason. I just hate it the same way I hate onions in salad. Why?

Partner is the winner I guess.

personally, i'm advocating for the return of "old lady"

and then... whatever the male equivalent of that is

Except that's your father, which is a whole different kind of awkward.

ayrt

I've heard it used both ways, actually. If it's a guy saying it, he means his dad. But if it's a woman (and it's always a middle aged one), she's talking about her boyfriend/husband. I've never heard a woman use it to refer to her father, and I've never heard a woman under 40 use it at all.

In my language, while we do have words meaning boy/girlfriend, these days most people use 'my friend'. Which I hate. I mean, maybe when it's about your SO it's fine, but when you're single and simply referring to an actual friend, it can get confusing.

One of many things wrong with German, ja.

"Wife" or "fiancee." She does the same.

Partner. Best of the worst. Bonus gender neutral when not wanting to out myself.

I call my partner my partner in public, because that's what she is and there is a business component to our relationship. There is to any long term relationship in which finances are shared. I've used it for as long as I've been an adult, because that tends to be what people in egalitarian relationships call the person they're with. It also doesn't automatically imply that there are strictly gendered roles to the relationship, and doesn't automatically inform someone of my sexuality.

I like all of those aspects of the word partner.
