I was wondering how to tag my fic. In the fic, I have a guy talking about an alien culture he encountered while he's been gone from earth. The alien culture is not from canon - I made it up- and the talk about it takes a large chunk of the fic. My MC also underwent an alien medical procedure that left a small mark on him.

Would this be worldbuilding? Alien cultures? Alien biology? Does talking about it and not showing it make a difference? I want to connect with the readers who might find this interesting and not false-advertise.

Is there a xenobiology tag?

There should be.

There probably is.

I'm really on the fence about the xenobiology/alien biology tag because I go over the alien culture but don't do anything to describe them or their world. And the only thing I say about what they did to my MC is how it affects him; I just barely touch on what the aliens use it for. BUT what they did to him is the main driver of the plot.

I don't generally hang out in xenobiology places so I'm not sure how much or little they're looking for/find acceptable.

I mean, I would assume they're people who are into alien dicks, but if you actually went into the biology, I think it would still be an appropriate tag.

If you don't go into the biology, doesn't work as well. Alien cultures probably works though.

(That's not a dig at anyone who's into alien dicks, btw. God bless your life)

Tagging it alien cultures should be okay, I think.

AU and Original Fiction. that is the tags you use.

This is fanfiction but I do waffle on AU. I mean, I added a whole new culture but it is the guy's job to go into space and deal with all sorts of aliens. When he gets back, it's set after the canon. I think the only thing that would be AU is the introduction of the aliens and they're only talked about.

/not sure

DA

Depends on the canon, I think. If people discovering new alien races is a thing that happens in the canon, then I'd say it's not really AU, it's just extrapolating from existing canon. Something like Star Trek, meeting new alien cultures and being experimented on by them is pretty much the cast's job. If, however, the canon is much more limited in its alien races (say, invasion stories where there's only one alien enemy), then introducing a new species would be jarring. I ... I think I still wouldn't say it's AU, though, unless it's contradicting canon in some way? If you're giving a character's canon injury a new origin, then it's AU, but if you're just giving the character a new injury in a canon-plausible way that simply wasn't mentioned yet during canon, then it's not AU, it's just future!fic or expanding the universe.

It depends to an extent on what canon you're using and its parameters, but I think I disagree with the above. I wouldn't call that AU.

Thanks! That was helpful.

Depending on the precise circumstances, you could use some of these:

"Future Fic" or "Post-Canon" if it's all post-canon, "Aftermath" might help signify that they're discussing this after the fact, "Post-Mission" might help with same, "First Contact", "Exploration", "Worldbuilding", "Original Non-Human Characters", "Original Alien Characters", "Aliens", "Alien Cultures", "Alien Cultural Differences", "Alien Technology", "Alien Abduction" or "Captivity" if it was a violent or unplanned meeting, "Medical Experimentation" or "Human Experimentation" if the medical procedure was involuntary on his part, etc.

If you think of another tag/trope you want to use, try typing it into the search field on AO3 and see if anything similar comes up?
