Question Thread

Ask your questions!

Re: Question Thread

Can you even imagine having sex with Jim Breuer? Do you think his face would look just as laid-back and goofy in the throes of sex, or would he get all intense and weird?

No. And I also used to think this about Gilbert Gottfried.

How could anyone fuck someone with a voice like that? I mean, ball gags exist I guess but holy shit.

AO3 Tags

(Anonymous) 2015-08-19 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I was wondering how to tag my fic. In the fic, I have a guy talking about an alien culture he encountered while he's been gone from earth. The alien culture is not from canon - I made it up- and the talk about it takes a large chunk of the fic. My MC also underwent an alien medical procedure that left a small mark on him.

Would this be worldbuilding? Alien cultures? Alien biology? Does talking about it and not showing it make a difference? I want to connect with the readers who might find this interesting and not false-advertise.

Is there a xenobiology tag?

There should be.

Tagging it alien cultures should be okay, I think.

AU and Original Fiction. that is the tags you use.

Re: AO3 Tags

Depending on the precise circumstances, you could use some of these:

"Future Fic" or "Post-Canon" if it's all post-canon, "Aftermath" might help signify that they're discussing this after the fact, "Post-Mission" might help with same, "First Contact", "Exploration", "Worldbuilding", "Original Non-Human Characters", "Original Alien Characters", "Aliens", "Alien Cultures", "Alien Cultural Differences", "Alien Technology", "Alien Abduction" or "Captivity" if it was a violent or unplanned meeting, "Medical Experimentation" or "Human Experimentation" if the medical procedure was involuntary on his part, etc.

If you think of another tag/trope you want to use, try typing it into the search field on AO3 and see if anything similar comes up?

If you meet people on meetups.com, and they have social media accounts, is it weird to follow them before you've met up?

Re: Question Thread

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2015-08-19 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
...A little weird, yeah. Follow them after you've actually met, not before.

Re: Question Thread

(Anonymous) 2015-08-19 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd find it weird. If we haven't met, why would you follow me or friend me? Plenty of time for that if you meet someone and hit it off.

Re: Question Thread

(Anonymous) 2015-08-19 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Why do the guys who complain the most about people being "offended by everything these days" get offended so easily by just about anything? And get seriously worked up about minor issues despite calling anyone who even talks about an issue they think is minor "pussies" and the like?

Re: Question Thread

(Anonymous) 2015-08-19 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
*shrug*

because they're a bunch of stupid dickheads?

Re: Question Thread

(Anonymous) 2015-08-19 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Easy, because they're threatened, know they're indefensible, and have to invalidate other people's opinions in order to defend their own position.

Re: Question Thread

(Anonymous) 2015-08-19 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Because when they complain about "people who get offended by everything", what they really mean is "people who get offended by things I don't find offensive".

Because they like the status quo and don't want things to change. They're happy with how things are and if others protest enough or vote with their wallets enough then things will inevitably change, in a direction they're not happy with.

Tumblr Ask vs Fan Mail

I'd like to contact a tumblr user I've never spoken to before and I was wondering which method is better. Are there any expectations with either of these? Is Ask like a PM if it's not anon? Or is it always public if there's a response?

What's your experience been?

Can anyone tell me about some good video games with a strong storyline that don't revolve around fighting? It's just so tedious for me when I want to explore but keep getting interrupted by enemies. Unless those enemies are creatures that I can catch and train. Then I'm onboard. But I've asked about that before so now I'm wondering about games that aren't about wandering around fighting things. I've had Myst and Planescape: Torment recommended to me before and I still want to check them out but things keep getting in the way. Any others? I don't own any consoles so they need to be available for PC or Nintendo (3)DS.

I'm also curious about if there are games with morality systems that aren't largely built around whether or not you kill certain people. Not necessarily looking for recommendations there, I'm just curious about how common this is.

How do you break up with a guy you're not even dating?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-19 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
A friend set up a double date with a friend of her SO. We'd met a couple of days earlier at a thing at my friend's, where we had about five minutes of small talk. Anyway, he apparently told my friend that he "wanted to talk with me again" and I figured why not.

The double date was nice, but nothing I have to repeat and honestly, I spent most of my time talking to my friend or her SO. The night wasn't a disaster, though, so when my friend asked me if she could give the guy my mobile number I said yes thinking that maybe the guy had just been shy and maybe we'd click once he's more comfortable.

We text a couple of times and long story short, he's nice. Which I mean in all the underwhelmed glory of the word. To misquote Into the Woods: he's not good, he's not bad, he's just nice. We don't seem to have any interests in common and from his reaction to friend's SO's gay chicken story he seems to have some hang ups regarding homosexuality (which I can tolerate getting annoyed by when it's a friend, but not something I want in a partner).

Now he's asked me out for a proper date and he's nice, so I don't want to hurt his feelings. Nor do I want grief from my friend, who is very much behind this thing and doesn't see why just being nice isn't enough to make me want to date a guy.

So, FS, how do I break up with a guy without having even been on a proper date with him? I wouldn't mind having him as a friend, but anything more is definitely out of the question.

Fantasy fiction

(Anonymous) 2015-08-19 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
There was a thread the other day about how fantasy fans have the most shit taste. Howso? Is it because everything is associated with GoT now? Or the cliche-middle-English tropes? I thought that was behind us in the year 2015.

Asking because I've been an aspiring fantasy writer, but I haven't read much, or any at all recently. Lately I've become very disillusioned by the whole scene for different reasons beyond supposedly crappy material. Kind of want to forget about writing and go to medical school.

Re: Question Thread

(Anonymous) 2015-08-19 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
How do I get past this wall, FS?

This is partly a wall set up by others, against me. I am not at all in the physical sphere or presence of the people who have done this to me. I will not ever be in the physical sphere or the presence of the people who have done this to me. Not without a restraining order anyway. But that is not likely to happen anyway. I mean they have not physically done anything to me. (Yet?) In the present.

Objectively. Objectively I know this means I have won against them. I am in a much better position than any of the rest of them. Even the ones who think they are in better positions. Objectively speaking: Karma is now paying them all back, by the truckload, if the filtered information I am receiving is even close to correct.

Subjectively though. Subjectively it feels like they have won. All because they have banded together and collectively are presenting a false reality going back decades that I utterly refute because it DID happen exactly as I remember it. But. It is not like they are telling my family and friends this. They have only told ME this. Everyone who knows me, believes ME and would never believe their lies anyway, if they even had the balls to tell my friends/family their lies. They don't. This means objectively I have won against even that head game of theirs. But. It feels like they have won because they think they have won, by denying what I remember. Which they are never ever ever going to back down from. But they have not won. Even though they think they have won, by doing this to me.

The thing is. THE THING IS. My actual, day-to-day life has not changed one single atom as a result of all of this. These ... people ... have not had any literal tangible physical impact on me, my life, my goals, my plans, etc.

My question then: Why can't I then continue on as though this was just an unpleasant blip and carry on as I was before? I cannot stop thinking about it, I cannot stop thinking up ways to get around it and I keep scratching itches to resolve this that are only giving me mental poison oak.
