Tumblr Ask vs Fan Mail

I'd like to contact a tumblr user I've never spoken to before and I was wondering which method is better. Are there any expectations with either of these? Is Ask like a PM if it's not anon? Or is it always public if there's a response?

What's your experience been?

Personally I prefer asks because it is easier to respond to them.

Personally, I like to either use fanmail or an anon ask if that option is open.

Mostly because, in both of those ways, my question cannot be posted with my name attached to it.

IME people are more comfortable with asks than fan mail, until you've been talking with them for a little bit. Fan mail lets you send longer messages though, so there's that.

Asks can be kinda like PMs if you're not anon. The person you send them to can choose to respond publicly or send it privately to you.

If you're asking a question and want a response, use Ask rather than Fan Mail. The person you're sending it to has the option of replying as a public post or a private reply. If you prefer a private reply, say so in your message and people will usually oblige.

What if I'm just squeeing over how amazing they are? I would like to strike up a friendship if they are willing. Do people not answer fanmail?

You can only answer fan mail from a person if you're following that person, so if you hope to strike up a conversation, don't use fan mail. As to whether or not people respond, that's really up to the person. Same rules apply for every correspondence:

1) Be polite.
2) Ask a question (that isn't already covered in their FAQ if they have one)
3) But don't ask them to check out your blog, etc. unless they've announced they like that sort of thing
4) Don't make it weird.

Someone tried to explain this to me the other day! I still don't completely understand what the difference is but I think that fan mail is more personal (And private)? Asks can be answered publicly or privately and I'm never sure which is more appropriate or what the person would want. (Not that I get them often anyway.)

So, er, I guess both are fine but if you want a private reply specify that?

If you send fanmail, make sure you can recieve fanmail too.

A lot of people on tumblr flat out hate fan mail. they may say so in there blogs.

Fan mails are a pain in the ass. Asks are easier to deal with.

Can I ask why you think that? I don't understand why people think they're a pain at all. They're pretty straight-forward to me.

Asks are easier to respond to right in the blog proper.

Oh, so is it you're not a fan of private messaging so much?

If something comes up that should be in private, it'll stay private (not that it's ever come up) but if you're just directly responding to something I posted or asking me a question, I'd really rather be able to blog it.

They're pain because unless you're following the person who sent you the fan mail, you can't respond to them. Asks are easier because they give you the ability to reply either as a public post or in private.

But if you ARE following them isn't it easier to have a conversation through fan mail?
