Question though -- if you don't have the internet at home, then how can you POSSIBLY be stealing in the first place?

I hope you're not advocating that poverty means it's okay to shoplift books or DVDs.

Because if one doesn't have the internet at home, then I fail to see how pirating is even possible.

So my point stands.

Oh for fuck's sake, someone thinking that stealing material things is the same as torrenting. Torrenting isn't even defined as stealing in my country, where stealing is "intent to permanently deprive". Torrenting does not.

Um...I think you missed the point.

The argument is that some people don't have the internet at home and thus don't have access to "free" entertainment. My point is that if someone doesn't have the internet at home, it's not like they're going to be torrenting/downloading anything.

They'd have to go somewhere else to do that -- which just means they could easily go to the library for free/legal entertainment.

Thus, I have no sympathy.

Given that that's how I get by (I haven't purchased media in years), of course I have no sympathy.

People have so many free options for entertainment (if you have the internet) that there is absolutely no excuse to torrent/pirate unless you're an entitled shit.

define: entitled

believing oneself to be inherently deserving of privileges or special treatment.

If you believe you inherently deserve access to a particular book, movie, TV show, video game, etc. you are by definition entitled -- no one has a "right" to these things. You feel that you're special and everyone else should pay but you should get it for free.

Did you completely ignore the bit where I suggested someone could have watched it at a friend's house? Of course you did, or you wouldn't be asking this question. There's other ways to consume media legally that don't involve piracy or physical theft, but again, those aren't completely free either. You can't always rely on friends to loan you movies, and if you don't even have any friends to begin with, and you can't afford the transportation to the library, and you can't afford internet... well, in all likelihood you prooobably have some more pressing matters to worry about than whether or not you can "participate in fandom" or consume entertainment, and at that point the question becomes moot, doesn't it?

I equate watching at a friend's house to the library.

My point is that someone can call themselves a fan as long as they aren't stealing.

Watch at a friend's house? Good.

Go to the library? Fine.

Watch in class? Swell.

But if you're stealing/torrenting/pirating, you don't get to call yourself a fan, sorry.

I feel that you shouldn't call yourself a fan if you're stealing from the creator.

You can't hurt someone and then claim that you're doing it out of love/care, dude.

If someone downloaded my book illegally, I'd hardly give them a warm reception just because they loved it. They clearly don't respect me because they think my work is worthless and they're entitled to it as though it took no paid labor to produce.

Of course it is.

People have the right to be paid for the work they produce.

You may think they're overcharging -- and that's your right -- but it's not your business to take something that's not yours.

And nowadays, with youtube and amazon, if authors/creators don't want to use an intermediary, they have plenty of options to do so. So the price they set is what they think they're worth.

And if they bought the book when they could afford it? And then they bought all the other stuff?

Sometimes money is so tight that getting into something and knowing that you like it enough to support the artist/buy their other work is barred simply because they can't know if the $20 in grocery money they're about to spend on entertainment is going to be money well spent or pissed away.

It's people who act like books/movies/tv shows/video games should be theirs just because they want it that I have an issue with.

It's not hurting. It's not supporting the creators, but it's not hurting them.

If you watch at a friend's house or get something from the library you're not supporting the creators either, just as you're not supporting them.

You seem to be under the same impression that every illegal download = one missed sale, but that's not just not true. Many people would just simply not watch/read/play if there only option was to buy it, the only reason they do is because they get it from free, so they wouldn't be supporting the creator in this instance either. At least with pirating there's the chance that they'll like it and rec it to people who will buy the product.

I'm not saying piracy is ethical, and yeah, it would be better if everyone bought it if they want it, but in a discussion about whether or not someone counts as fan it really doesn't matter how they got to the product in the first place.

I just think it's interesting that you are painting with such broad strokes. By your own admission, if I'm not into what you're into, why would you presume to say that I'm not a fan of what I'm into?

My source is NOT available for purchase, even if I could. Not even on Japanese auction sites. It isn't even known in English speaking countries because there has never been an English translation. If anything, giving the show exposure to an English-speaking audience increases its chances of being seen by those who have to money to license it.

So you're passing judgement on a fandom with very different dynamics (I'm assuming) than yours, which I find.. interesting.

Actually re-reading this something strikes me: It's not my stuff you're into.

This, I think, is rather telling, dunno how I missed it before. It says that in spite of all your pissing and moaning about piracy, you don't actually care if people pirate other peoples' work but god forbid someone get a copy of your e-book off Kickass. That, to me, kind of shows your fundamental flaw here, in that you don't actually care about other people, you're just pounding on a moralistic drum for your own feelings of superiority.

And telling other people they're not real fans is so rude and grating. You don't get to decide what they like. You don't get to decide what's important to them. You can say you don't think they're behaving like GOOD fans, but you. do. not. get to tell them they're not fans. It's implying you know them better than they know themselves.
