Fare enough. Obliviate is a dangerous spell though. And he stole credit for everything. And wanished dones in Nevil's arm, if I'm not mistaken. An evil, evil man. Which doesn't precludes anyone liking him, ofc.

HARRY'S arm. How do you forget that.

[personal profile] solticisekf 2015-08-22 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
lol
I remember an arm sousage, that's all.

It took me a minute to figure out what "wanished dones" was supposed to mean. I'm sorry, but I find that typo super enjoyable. XD

It took me a minute too. And it shouldn't have. >.<
:)

Obliviate being dangerous is played up even more in second year fanfics. Usually with Lockhart using it to get away with sexually assaulting students.

[personal profile] solticisekf 2015-08-23 10:35 am (UTC)(link)
It's usualy played up in fics, along the lines that he deserved his stay in Mungo, though I didn't see much non con. There was one WIP and that's it.

He was so much fun!

(Anonymous) 2015-08-22 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I was a bit disappointed that he wasn't prettier. (Kenneth is okay, it's just that I expected someone ... more swoon-worthy).

But perhaps that was the point: GP wasn't nearly as attractive as he thought he was?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-22 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Or that his confidence and 'charm' helps make him more attractive than his physiciallity first suggests? And he knows how to dress well. Like, a person can look completely different if they're not confident and comfortable with them themselves, wear old, badly fitting clothes, no make up, barely speaking than if they're confident, well spoken, wearing brand new, flashy clothes that goes well with their features, hair brushed and make up etc. just look at any 'weight loss' advert that has the person just holding themselves differently ( slouching, vs shoulders up and back etc), and washing their hair/wearing make up/different clothes etc.

They actually wanted Hugh Grant for the role but his schedule didn't allow it/ they could not agree a salary.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-22 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
eh, really?

Rupert Everett could have nailed it, I think ( and he fathoms better looking that Grant, imo)

(Anonymous) 2015-08-22 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually wish they used Hugh Laurie.

I love him. Branagh was brilliant, he makes me laugh every time I watch that movie.

He didn't so much throw as hurl himself into the role, and his gleeful awfulness was vastly entertaining. So much fun!

(Anonymous) 2015-08-22 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
He's a great character. At first he's hilarious, but maybe a bit one-note. Then you find out what he's done and suddenly he becomes less of a caricature, more human and dark. Finally, in the books at least, the trio meets him at St Mungo's and on the surface it's funny again, but it's really quite bleak. I was disappointed they didn't go to the hospital in the movie version, I would have loved to have seen this moment (and Neville's parents).

Yes! Out of everything from the books that didn't make it to the screen, this exclusion was on the short list for what disappointed me the most for some reason. I mean, I totally get why they left it out since it's not like it was super important to the plot, but I would have loved to see it.

I get this. He's a terrible person, but great as a character, and one of the ones that really worked on screen, too.

(not sure I'd call him 'precious', though...)

This is one thing I really like about HP. Horrible people like Lockhart, Umbridge, and Bellatrix Lestrange make for really compelling characters imo.

It's true. I think that Rowling had some real strengths with some of the characters she created, and how she humanized them.
Though at the end of the day, I'm not the /hugest/ fan of HP.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-22 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
he's like pure camp in human form.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-23 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't read any of the books, I only watched 2 movies that didn't feature him (iirc), and I all I know about him is from bits and pieces of HP fans' conversations.

But I like him.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-26 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
me too omg. He was the funniest character. X)))
