I think there's a little too much OT aping regarding the designs, and the constant "but practical effects tho!" is rather annoying.

idk, while I'm very... ambivalent about the movie, I admit that I'm kind of happy they're going with the OT aesthetic because I think it'll feel more Star Warsy. A lot of the modern stuff comes off as a bit too slick and generic for me...

what can I say, I grasp on hope as much as I can XD

I do have to agree with OP though, I tend to find JJ Abrams' stuff kind of generic.

See, the differences in visuals between the trilogies always made sense to me. The PT still seemed lived in, it was just an era where everything was actually maintained and things were good. Things looked like they did in the OT because of the Empire.

I actually really liked the differences in visuals.

Oh, I was okay with the look of the prequel trilogy, because like you say, it was a time of relative plenty before everything fell apart. But this movie is supposed to be post-OT, so even if they're rebuilding, things still shouldn't be back to looking slick and shiny imo.

I agree with this. I'm of the opinion that what matters is that the effects are good. Practical effects are not automatically better than CGI. And I for one love all 6 of the other Star Wars movie and don't get a lot of the prequel hate.
