The visual aspect is the main thing I'm really worried about in this movie.

We'll probably all think it's awesome at first viewing, then come to find it annoying and terrible after the excitement has rubbed off - just like with Star Trek.

I think there's a little too much OT aping regarding the designs, and the constant "but practical effects tho!" is rather annoying.

idk, while I'm very... ambivalent about the movie, I admit that I'm kind of happy they're going with the OT aesthetic because I think it'll feel more Star Warsy. A lot of the modern stuff comes off as a bit too slick and generic for me...

what can I say, I grasp on hope as much as I can XD

I do have to agree with OP though, I tend to find JJ Abrams' stuff kind of generic.

See, the differences in visuals between the trilogies always made sense to me. The PT still seemed lived in, it was just an era where everything was actually maintained and things were good. Things looked like they did in the OT because of the Empire.

I actually really liked the differences in visuals.

Oh, I was okay with the look of the prequel trilogy, because like you say, it was a time of relative plenty before everything fell apart. But this movie is supposed to be post-OT, so even if they're rebuilding, things still shouldn't be back to looking slick and shiny imo.

I agree with this. I'm of the opinion that what matters is that the effects are good. Practical effects are not automatically better than CGI. And I for one love all 6 of the other Star Wars movie and don't get a lot of the prequel hate.

*nods* I'm not really a SW/Lucas fan, but I can definitely see that "technically competent but lifeless" thing you're talking about in reference to JJA.

(There are certain conductors whose recordings always strike me that way.)

It's Star Wars fandom, so they'll all go on about how it's the greatest thing ever for a few months, then they'll suddenly do a turnaround the likes of which hasn't been seen since Order 66 (complete with incessant flaw picking), and the vast majority of the fandom will hate on the movie.

You can count on it.

I don't think it's just Star Wars fandom... This kind of thing happens all the time with media. It isn't always sudden, though it can be.

I'm not even saying people are always wrong, either; sometimes I agree. Sometimes once the shine and excitement fade away you realize this thing you were so into is flawed or disappointing. I felt that way about ME3 (no, not even just because of the endings); didn't stop loving it, just realized it wasn't as perfect as I originally thought.

But I feel like this film would've had a better chance of being accepted if someone other than JJ were at the helm. I even like the Star Trek reboot, but that's clearly an unpopular opinion and a lot of people are angry at him touching another beloved franchise.

I'm just going to wait and see. Frankly, as much as I loved Star Wars growing up, I won't be heartbroken if this film isn't good. In the end I'll be okay with just ignoring it. (Like I do with Indiana Jones and The Crystal Skull.)

Good points.

It's Star Wars. How good could it be?

I'm not a die-hard Star Wars fan so I'm just hoping to enjoy it on some level, though I'm not expecting a masterpiece either and I think it's fair to not be looking forward to it if JJ.Abrahm's isn't your cup of tea. I don't tend to mind his stuff but I'll agree that it can be pretty generic.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-22 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, same. I just want it to be fun, still good for later Netflix viewings, and full of fun fandom stuff. I'm not asking for Citizen Kane.
