Thoughts?

Haven't seen it, not planning to.

I'm not into rap in general so it doesn't tickle my fancy.

I really, really want to see it. I just don't know how I'm gonna be able to. :(

Torrent?

I don't like to torrent movies that are still in the theater. Partly because I hate shitty cam vids and partly because, while I torrent DVDs/BRs all the time, it just doesn't sit right with me.

Dre's abuse of women is conspicuously absent, but it's a good movie on the whole.

That's absolutely true, and shameful. But then again think of all the movies about the stories of famous white men who leave out domestic abuse etc. and no one says anything.

So we have some kind of obligation not to mention it here?

We should mention it every time.

Re: Straight Outta Compton

(Anonymous) 2015-08-23 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
Uh no, mention it. But just be mindful of why you're so hyper aware about Dre's domestic violence in the NWA biopic, but probably aren't aware of (or excuse) the domestic violence committed by famous white men

That's one hell of a conclusion you're jumping to there, anon. If I'm not mistaken, the point I'm coming down harder on Dre because he's a Black man, but I assure you that I am well aware of (and routinely mention, and never excuse, thanks) conspicuously absent domestic abuse in biopics of people regardless of their race. Don't form narratives that don't have any basis in reality.

SA

Not...sure why half my sentence got whisked away there. "If I'm not mistaken, the point *you're trying to make is that* I'm coming down harder"

Why are people always insinuating that if you care about one thing, you absolutely cannot care about another thing in equal measure? Most people have the capacity to care about several issues at once. We're not Peter Pan fairies.

I'm stealing this for future use!

"stories of famous white men who leave out domestic abuse etc. and no one says anything"

Yeah. Nobody knows about Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings, and there definitely haven't been any books or articles written on the subject.

... oops, never mind.

Dre did issue a statement of apology for it, though.

I recently watched the trailer (hadn't been aware of it until then) and thought it looked pretty damn good. The comments, though were full of people going 'I'm white, and I don't want to die, so I won't be going to the theatre to see this' which just made me want to spit at how *stupid* people are.

WTF ever, idiots. It's playing locally, but I don't generally see any movie in the theatre unless it's a big sci-fi kinda thing where a huge screen is best. I'll dl or Netflix it at some point.
