Re: Vent about things fans get wrong about certain cultures, languages, countries, etc

I don't know if *fans* get it wrong, but I have seen people get it wrong or just forget or whatever: Belgium is bilingual. Most people think Belgians speak French, and that's true, in the southern part of the country. In the northern part people speak Dutch, more specifically Flemish.

Oh, and Dutch and Flemish are not two different languages. I've seen that one around too. British English and American English are different, but both still definitely English.

I was JUST reading an old Grantland article about this and was shocked that I had never learned that before.

Also, Belgium isn't the worst country in the world. I don't get why everyone hates on Belgium so much.

"Belgium" is the worst swear word in the galaxy.

There is the Douglas Adams thing the other anon mentioned, the perceived softness on sex and drugs which is a big hot button for a lot of conservatives in the EU and US, and of course there is the reason why the Congo basin has been in a state of anarchy (honestly, you can't even call it a civil war, it is just pure anarchy) for the last 50 years.

I've never heard of anyone hating on Belgium. Is it a European thing? I'm American, and the only time we... well, even acknowledge Belgium exists... is to talk about your delicious waffles and chocolates.

Yeah…I don't know where OP thinks everyone hates Belgium.

If anything, it has a pretty good rep for having the delicious aforementioned chocolates and waffles.

And having Germany invade France through it. But no one I know blames the Belgians for that.

Maybe I'm in the wrong places but the only time I ever saw anyone hate on Belgium was when I knew an English woman who hated living in Belgium because she felt there was not enough of anything available, including jobs.
