I hate "all Germans are Nazis". You should see what we get taught in schools.

Not German (except by heritage), but I'm sure that gets frustrating, and I can imagine what you're taught in schools.

Everything in fiction about Scotland. Everything. It is like everything about Scotland stops in the 1950s (I mean, for Airdrie, fair enough) at the very latest. Most of the stereotypes stop in 1850s (again, for Airdrie...) and it is just offensive. Especially when someone tries a Scottish accent, even the best ones wander around the entire country and are sounding like my great-gran would have thought was old fashioned. Worse when it is written down. It is one thing try dialect (if you are exceptionally good at researching which dialect), but the phonetic accent thing is just gross and racist, especially with the antique accents, dialects, and attitudes. Just fucking gie it up!

+1 I don't know anyone who says Laddie or Lassie every third word in a conversation, you wouldn't know that from fiction though. Don't get me started on the Scotland is either Edinburgh or the Highlands and Islands bias too. That is Western islands, obviously, even other Scottish people need reminding Orkney, Shetland, and Fair Isle exist. No one ever sets anything in Galloway or Ayrshire either.

Phonetically-spelled accents in general are awful. But it annoys me especially with Scottish accents because I'm so familiar with them.

A few dialect words here and there or a mention of an accent really will do. Especially since Scottish people's speech patterns vary as much as anyone with any other kind of accent.

Anything with Jews always has them making a massive deal about Hanukkah, mostly because it's a convenient drop for "oh it's Jewish Christmas lolol" and let's them have a character mention they're Jewish for .3 seconds and move on.

Hanukkah is great, don't get me wrong, but it is far from being the most significant holiday of the year. Every time I see it it annoys me.

Do you mind me asking what are some of the more important holidays? I don't know much, but I'd like to learn!

And the uncritical Jewish support for Israel. Sorry, that is mom's generation that does that. A lot of us young Jews are on the same page as everyone else in thinking the current Israeli government and policies are pieces of genocidal shit. Sure, Iran might hate us, but every country is hated by someone. It is time that Israelis grew the hell up. Just don't ask me to repeat that at dinner with mom and grandma though.

OMG YES. This is exactly what I came here to say.

To be fair, in America Hanukkah has become the biggest celebrated holiday for a lot of Jews just because of the Christmas correlation. My Jewish friends observe the other holidays and acknowledge that they're more important, but they "celebrate" Hanukkah the most, for fun. It has a lot to do with commercialism pushing that angle (most people here celebrate Christmas, Jewish kids felt left out, companies saw the opportunity and took it) but I don't know anyone who minds, although some more devout Jews do I'm sure.

I don't know if *fans* get it wrong, but I have seen people get it wrong or just forget or whatever: Belgium is bilingual. Most people think Belgians speak French, and that's true, in the southern part of the country. In the northern part people speak Dutch, more specifically Flemish.

Oh, and Dutch and Flemish are not two different languages. I've seen that one around too. British English and American English are different, but both still definitely English.

I was JUST reading an old Grantland article about this and was shocked that I had never learned that before.

Also, Belgium isn't the worst country in the world. I don't get why everyone hates on Belgium so much.

A lot of fanwriters really don't have much experience drinking

that's all i'm saying

Or sex. Or human relationships. Or men.

I tend to give a pass on that because drunk is hard to write. This happens all the time in TV and movies and certainly 90% of the writing staff has been drunk at some point. Since actual drunk behavior is so random and writers need to move the plot forward, it's hard to do effectively.

There's a children's rhyme which exists as two forms in the UK and in America with one crucial difference. I once read a fic set in a British fandom in Britain that used the wrong version of the rhyme. It wouldn't have bothered me but the rest of the fic was trying so hard to be uber British in that American-teenager-writing-Sherlock-fic way. It just seemed really really lazy.

Brits trying to write as Americans and the other way round.

Because I grew up with books, tv, and movies from both places, I think I'm so used to things being one or the other that it's kind of jarring to read everything scrambled together.

Holland doesn't really have a ridiculous amount of drugs. Marihuana is as common as it is in the UK.

Canada is not a socialist paradise, nor is it free of racism/xenophobia/general bigotry. The racial dynamics here are just not the same as they are in America. First Nations people tend to get the worst of the institutionalized racism, but other minority groups are not at all exempt. In some of the more backwater, isolated places (such as where I grew up), anyone who isn't a heterosexual White Anglo-Saxon Protestant WILL face discrimination.

Also, Canada isn't a frozen wasteland 24/7. This country is MASSIVE, and varies wildly in climate. In sme places, like parts of BC, it's abnormal for the temperature to drop way below 0 degrees Celsius. Even here in the prairie provinces, where the winters are hell (-30 degrees C is normal and expected), we still have proper summers with heat and sunshine and flowers and all the other things you'd associate with summer!

Also also, we don't all talk like some bizarre hybrid of Newfoundlanders and American Mid-Westerners. Much like the climate, the Canadian accent varies depending on what region of Canada you're in. Canadian raising (pronouncing about as "a-boat", for example) is a very real linguistic phenomenon, but it is exaggerated in media depictions of Canadians.

...eh?
