There's been a thing going around claiming a POC person is being played by a white male when two seconds on IMDb would show that allegation is false.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-23 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Fact checking is hard.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-23 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. The white character is a new character and simply replaces the POC in role. I don't see how that could be seen as offfensive. It is a seperate character they created to take place of the historical figure for story telling reasons.

AYRT

Still kind of a dick move to put a white (presumably cis) male front and center when the actual narrative involves leading people who are decidedly not white, at least.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-23 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
There weren't any leaders in the riot.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-23 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
And some of the people claiming credit for kicking things off weren't even there according to people who were, so there's that to consider.

SA

You're so presh, anon. People in left-wing circles love to tout the whole 'let's be totes non-hierarchical' kumbaya party line, but fucking face it, there's always more forceful personalities and among those are usually the ones who end up kicking off something that ends up being a well-known phenom.

You don't see how it would be offensive to create a fictional white guy and then make him look more heroic by pilfering the actions of real live non-white people to paste into his narrative?

I mean, c'mon, if there was a movie version of the Montgomery bus boycotts that started with a fictional dude refusing to go to the back of the bus, people would boggle. Why would you do that? It's not a ~storytelling choice~, it's just bizarre.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-23 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
It has to be relateable to normal people not just pressure groups and historians, I've no problem subbing characters in to make that happen.

[personal profile] erinptah 2015-08-23 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, of course, only white men are "relateable" to "normal people"! That makes total sense, and is not screamingly racist/sexist at all.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-23 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't get mad at me, it is a social expectation. Even blacks relate better to a movie if a white man is the hero. Look at Die Hard or James Bond, way popular among blacks as well as white people.

Lmao. This is the most ridiculous comment.

this is a terrible post tbh

(Anonymous) 2015-08-23 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Cause whites are the only normal people?
darkmanifest: (Default)

[personal profile] darkmanifest 2015-08-23 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Why, exactly? Usually the argument "it has to be relatable to most people!" is for financial reasons, but Stonewall is already a niche movie about a minority social issue, Joe White Hero isn't going to magically make it a blockbuster where otherwise it would have gone unnoticed.

Black and gay people aren't normal, ok.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-23 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Excep t there WERE actually people who were white in the riots.

[personal profile] erinptah 2015-08-23 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
We agree that it's not a problem to show white people in the riots in general!

The problem is when you're overwriting specific history-making figures with a made-up character. You shouldn't replace Rosa Parks with your own Original Male Character, and you shouldn't write out Marsha P. Johnson in order to show the first brick being thrown by a made-up white guy in a T-shirt and jeans.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-23 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
She's in the movie and he isn't the first person to throw a brick.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-23 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Whose actions are they pilfering?
erinptah: (Default)

[personal profile] erinptah 2015-08-23 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Marsha P. Johnson, irl black drag queen/trans activist (it's not totally clear how she would classify her gender identity in modern terms), generally credited with throwing the first brick. The leadership of the protests was heavy on trans women/drag queens of color in general, including Sylvia Rivera.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-23 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Marsha's in the movie.

Sylvia lied about being there.

They're not replacing any POC,

(Anonymous) 2015-08-23 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
This. From what I've read, this movie is not unlike Titanic; it tells the story of the boat sinking, but it uses fictional characters and their story, to draw the audience in.

It also sounds like there's a fair amount of knicker twisting going on over nothing. If you want historical accuracy go watch a documentary, this isn't one.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-24 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
You know your shit is wrong when even IMDB gets something right.
