Re: "Don't teach me not to get raped, teach men not to rape"

Which of course is false. In the US, rape is not normalized at all. Even being falsely accused of rape can ruin your life.

Yet, in many places (including prison) murdering someone is seen as less bad than raping someone.

It could also be the case that things are complex and seen in multiple different, sometimes contradictory, lights

But I've had this exact stupid argument a million times before so whatever, fuck it, you do you man

Well, murder can be worse than rape.

There are understandable reasons to murder someone -- if they hurt someone you love, for example, I think a lot of people would be sympathetic to the murderer if it was severe abuse.

But rape?

You're hurting someone purely due to your pleasure (feeling of power, sexual, etc.). A lot more people find that difficult/impossible to understand. And thus it seems more monstrous.

Murder is always worse than rape...

Fudge…what I meant to say is that Murder isn't always PERCEIVED as worse than rape because there are reasons to murder that most people could understand but understanding rape is much more difficult to understand.

If you find out that someone abused your child, you go to their house and kill them, I think you'll find quite a few people that would completely understand why/how you could do that even if you were a murderer.

But almost no one I know could understand the thought process behind raping someone.

A sad point I have to make is that rape in general is not normalized but certain types like prison rape sure as hell are, to the point where everyone jokes about how criminals will surely get raped in prison ha ha ha

^ both men and women, I've heard jokes about both. To be clear. Not an MRA thing

The New York Post proved that this week beyond all doubt. Any culture that thinks a newspaper, even as scummy a one as the post, that makes a rape joke as part of headline is a culture that is sick and seeped in rape acceptance.

Jesus, I'd never heard of Lynndie England, but when I looked it up, it's fucking horrific!

what's really horrific is how badly she got screwed over. the men in command were clearly the war criminals, but she just got rail roaded.

Murdering/assaulting women and (especially) children will get the same hatred in prison as raping them. It's not about the crime itself so much as who the perpetrator victimized, those who are considered too weak to fight back.

I sometimes feel like there actually is a rape culture in the US. But it only applies to male victims. Because sexually based crimes with female victims are seen as the worst crime a man can commit but when men are raped, it's a joke. Female teacher took advantage of young student? He should feel lucky! Prison rape is just hilarious - don't drop the soap! And female comedians can make all the rape jokes they want, so funny! And this whole attitude leads to male victims not being taken seriously at all, being erased and belittled to the point where they don't even know they are a victim because hey, men can't be raped right?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-24 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
It's not that I disagree, because that stuff is fucked up as hell.

But there's also other aspects of rape culture that don't have to do with male victims.

Not just rape jokes, Amy Schumer actually committed a rape, and then went on to do a public talk shaming the victim for not being man enough to satisfy her! There was ZERO public outcry outside of the MRA community and since they're always outcrying about stupid shit, they've got a "boy who cried wolf" kinda thing going on.

Had it been her who was intoxicated and raped, you know there would have been almost nothing but cries to murder the man (except from the MRA camp, of course) for breaking societies golden rule about rape and how rapists of women are the worst people in the world!
