Characters whose clothes don't match their personalities

(Anonymous) 2015-08-24 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Just list (and describe of course) any characters that come to mind who, in your opinion, have personalities that don't stereotypically "fit" their way of dressing (or their hair, makeup, whatever) at all.

Keep in mind, this is NOT necessarily a bad thing! In fact it can be really good and a neat bit of adding layers to characterization.

Felicity from Arrow. S2 - most of S4, she wore REALLY skimpy, tight clothing. Totally OOC for a nerdy office girl. Gorgeous, smart, but doesn't know what's appropriate office wear?

I haven't seen this show but I bet it's less about poor characterization and more about the fact that attractive women on TV are usually dressed in tight, skimpy clothing regardless of what job they're supposedly doing. Look at all the female detectives on every single crime show who are somehow going to work in push up bras and cleavage-revealing v-necks, every single day. It's kind of hilarious, really.

AYRT

While I agree with you that it's common, I think that means it's just poor characterization across the board!

I'm going to say Kira's second costume on Deep Space Nine. They decided to make it tighter solely for sex appeal purposes. And Kira has never seemed the type to go for sex appeal or pretty over practicality.

Agreed. And didn't they have her wear heels too?

Yup. Even though she's probably the Star Trek woman least likely to ever wear heals. She's still my favorite Trek character, but it always bugged me.

Anon above reminded me of Yugi Mutou from Yu-Gi-Oh. Personality of a shy golden retriever puppy, fashion of Sid Vicious playing hardcore BDSM.

I have to disagree with this, considering Yugi pretty much only wore his school uniform with a black shirt under and his jewelry screamed more punk than hardcore (lol) BDSM.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-25 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
Hence the Sid Vicious.

The BDSM is the part where he wears a guy on a giant-ass chain around his neck.

Hahaha, punks wear chains around their necks too, just google Sid Vicious, who wore one with a cheap lock on it, but other than that and maybe a bracelet or two, they have nothing going where looking similar is concerned.

So I stand by what I said earlier.

Yeah, but it's not just a chain, it's technically another guy on a chain. Sort of. Ish.

This show was confusing.

It's a puzzle with the soul of a dead Pharaoh in it. lol

I've always loved that about him. Yugi doesn't give a fuck, he's like "I WEAR MY CLOTHES LIKE THIS BECAUSE I CAN, I WEAR MY HAIR LIKE THIS BECAUSE I CAN." (Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDVMnQGqIXU)

Such an inspiring figure. ;_;

The Sixth Doctor.

nayrt

The Seventh Doctor too, to some extent, but actually deep down it suits him perfectly because he's a lying liar who tricks people like crazy.

the Doctor has no taste, it is one of the thing I liked about him.

Seven of Nine and the high-heeled costume they threw her in. It really doesn't make sense that she'd be okay with the heels, given that they serve no practical purpose whatsoever and she's all about efficiency. The biosuit is also stupid as hell (frankly, I think the Doctor could've been brought up on sexual harassment charges just for choosing that outfit for her), but since it isn't as likely to be a hindrance to her job performance and since Seven doesn't give a fuck about taboos regarding nudity and skimpy clothing anyway, it's...still pretty stupid. Not as bad as the heels, though.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-25 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
I hate Seven's catsuit most of all.

Re: Characters whose clothes don't match their personalities

(Anonymous) 2015-08-25 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
I'm still so angry about her outfits. They made a point to say the "biosuit" was something she HAD to wear for whatever reason, then why couldn't she wear it UNDER some normal clothes?

Such a great character, such a phenomenal actress, why couldn't the show's creators treat her like a person.

Agreed so hard.

Re: Characters whose clothes don't match their personalities

(Anonymous) 2015-08-25 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
Because the reason the "biosuit" itself was invented was solely for the purpose of fanservice. So her wearing it under her clothes would have been pointless to the producers :\
