Sometimes they're not even that complicated, it's just that they have a side to them that doesn't fall perfectly in line with everything else.

That's very true. Like, say, Lucius Malfoy is very evil. But the single one positive thing about him is that he cares for his family. So I get really annoyed at authors who write him as abusive just so they can woobify Draco.
