Steven Universe

A lot of fans read Pearl as autistic and think that's why Jasper called her "defective." I don't think it's quite that tidy. We know that Pearls are low-caste and meant to follow orders, and it seems like both they and Peridots were made to directly interface with computer systems. I think Pearls and Peridots are supposed to be unempathetic and not understand or care about social interaction, focused only on maintaining and repairing technology. Our Pearl is "defective" because she didn't accept that role and sought interaction with other Gems.

Another theory I've read is the fact her gem is not a perfect sphere, like an actual pearl you'd find in jewlery. It's more of an egg shape. Your theory would still fit in this, since the misshapen gem might have had an effect on her emotional traits.
