If I really like an author, I will sometimes read their fic in fandoms for things I've never watched/read. If I decide I like the characters enough to find other fic, I will then usually try out the source (especially if it's a movie). It's how I've gotten into several new fandoms.

I also love crossover and fusion fic and since I watch a lot of television shows (and thus see a lot of trailers and commercials for movies and other shows) and come to places like Fandom Secrets, I usually know something about the unwatched/unread fandoms - this doesn't usually lead to new fandoms. Like crossovers with His Dark Materials, which are legion, can be interesting, but I don't really want to read the books. And the Sentinel has an interesting premise, but I caught a little of the show back when it was first airing and it wasn't for me - however, I can really enjoy a fusion fic where a character I like is a Sentinel or Guide.
