Do you read fic for fandoms you aren't part of?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-24 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
And, by "part of," I mean never really seen or read the media on which it's based and you don't interact with the fandom at large. Like, you've only seen fanart for Harry Potter, but you read HP fic anyway. Or, you've only read one Hunger Games book, but you still read fic with spoilers for all three books.

What fandoms and why?

"never really seen or read the media on which it's based"

"and you don't interact with the fandom at large."

These two are wildly different things tho. Do you mean both or either/or?

Re: Do you read fic for fandoms you aren't part of?

It means exactly what it says.

You've never read or seen the media and you don't interact with the fandom, just read fic.

No, but I do look at fanart for tons of fandoms I have no clue about. But fic...it just can't hold my interest with fandoms I'm not familiar with, because I feel like I'm missing things and misinterpreting important context.

Yes, for Game of Thrones, I read Brienne/Jaime fic long before I watched the show. Including a huge, epic "what might happen" end of the series speculative fic.

Why? Because I really liked what I saw of the pairing through Tumblr. Lady Knight x One Handed Hobo FOREVER!

I've read some Man From UNCLE fic because someone I follow is a huge fan. Mostly the smut.

And I've read several Attack on Titan fics because they were smut with several kinks that I love but can't find much of.

The Big Bang Theory, because what I hoped it would be sounds nothing like what people say it is.

I've never read a fic for a fandom I know nothing about (apart from one White Collar threesome fic I read as a result of a rec here). But I will read fics for fandoms I'm way behind on or have only seen a few episodes of or read part of.

Re: Do you read fic for fandoms you aren't part of?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-24 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. A lot of big fandoms are for things that I haven't watched and wouldn't expect that I would enjoy, and so as a result sometimes you just get an insatiable hunger for fic and so you just go where the fic is. Most notably, Teen Wolf and OUAT.

Re: Do you read fic for fandoms you aren't part of?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-24 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
No. I read fic because I want more of something I like, so tbere's no reason to read fic of unfamiliar works. The lone exception is crossovers, and then only if there's an element relating to the half I'm there for that intrigues me.

But sometimes I read a crossover like that and it does prompt me to look into the other fandom.

I have for an author I really liked. I read everything she wrote.

Some fandoms I read because of her: Medical Investigation, Fast and Furious, Fastlane, 4 Feathers, Blade series, lots more.

I also read a Houston Knights fic after reading a fic set in the same universe on NCIS fanfiction (it was about centaurs).

Supernatural and Teen Wolf are both fandoms that I have a number of fic bookmarked for despite only having seen 1/2 an ep of Supernatural and none of Teen Wolf.

I like them because they have lengthy stories and since I don't care about the canon characters and how IC they are, I just get to judge on the plot of the story itself without having to invest in how accurate it is regarding canon.

I only saw two or so seasons of Smallville WAY back when it first aired, nor do I know anything about DC comics, yet I read the hell out of some Smalleville or xover Smallville/DC Clex fic.

I've read a few fics just for the kink even though I didn't know the fandom.

I read Supernatural fic because there's some pretty good stuff out there, but I don't watch the show. I tried to watch the show and found it just unbearable. Terrible, terrible acting. Cliched, stilted plots. Can't do it.

Pacific Rim most recently. Not actually sure why, I think I was linked to a Newt/Hermann fic and just chased the rabbit.

Sometimes I search for specific AU types I'm interested in, or other specific trope, and read fic for whatever fandoms come up. I've read some very random fics doing that.

I used to, especially for authors who's worked I really liked, but I stopped after I read this one person's AtLA/Zutara fanfic, and then actually watched the show, and realized that she had written the characters so OOC it wasn't even funny.

Absolutely, if I like the premise or writing. I don't watch Glee, but I've read some fantastic Glee fic.

Only if it's a crossover fic with a fandom I am familiar with, or if it's by an author I like who has written tons of amazing fic for one (or more) of my fandoms.

Otherwise, nope.

God, yes. Like, constantly. Mostly because I love crossovers to a ridiculous extent, and most crossovers function like a beginner's guide to [x fandom], but still. Partial fandom list:

-Supernatural
-Teen Wolf
-Stargate (SG1 and Atlantis)
-The Sentinel
-Worm
-Doctor Who

I'm probably still forgetting some. Pretty sure there's a bunch of fandoms where I started reading the fic long before actually watching the damn show too.

I do! I usually read fic for any incredibly popular fandom, since I'll always see recs for them everywhere and don't want to miss out (so at most I'll Google some character summaries and read away).

I mean, it gets pretty weird if I ever get around to watching/reading it, since I'll have this idea of who the characters are solely based on fanon, and a lot of the time I'll suddenly realize that a lot of the fic I liked was actually wildly OOC.

I've just spent the past week reading probably 109+ Kingsman fics and I've never seen the movie, and tbh, I don't remember what even inspired me to do this!

PS. I ship Harry/Merlin <3

Re: Do you read fic for fandoms you aren't part of?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-25 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
movie is A+ do recommend! I was worried it would be gross but while it was very violent the violence was stylized and there was very little in the way of legit gore. mostly it was like a live-action version of an anime version of a James Bond film, and shipping Harry/Merlin does indeed make sense also they are handsome buggers.

Re: Do you read fic for fandoms you aren't part of?

[personal profile] elaminator 2015-08-25 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
For the most part, no. There have been a couple of times I've done it (maybe three; I'm not kidding when I say a couple).

One was with Hawaii 5-0! I remember hearing that a lot of McShep fans had gotten into Steve/Danny, so I watched some fanvids, was intrigued and ended up reading some fic.

Shortly after that I binged watched the show. (I think that was when the show was in it's second season.) Was not disappointed, though I enjoyed the fic so much more once I had actually seen the show. lol.

I think the only other times I've done it was when it was rec'd to me or the fic was by an author I adored.

Yes.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-25 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
If I really like an author, I will sometimes read their fic in fandoms for things I've never watched/read. If I decide I like the characters enough to find other fic, I will then usually try out the source (especially if it's a movie). It's how I've gotten into several new fandoms.

I also love crossover and fusion fic and since I watch a lot of television shows (and thus see a lot of trailers and commercials for movies and other shows) and come to places like Fandom Secrets, I usually know something about the unwatched/unread fandoms - this doesn't usually lead to new fandoms. Like crossovers with His Dark Materials, which are legion, can be interesting, but I don't really want to read the books. And the Sentinel has an interesting premise, but I caught a little of the show back when it was first airing and it wasn't for me - however, I can really enjoy a fusion fic where a character I like is a Sentinel or Guide.

Re: Do you read fic for fandoms you aren't part of?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-25 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I mostly involve myself with small fandoms, but I have a few specific kinks/tropes that don't often show up anywhere but the big megafandoms. Often I'll just sift particular kink tag I want on A03 and read the stories for canons that I have at least passing familiarity with. Like, I've never been into Harry Potter. Never read the books, didn't care much for the movies. But I know who the characters are and what it's about, and since I'm reading mainly for the kink, that's all I really need.

I have a list of my "major" fandoms which is really a list of the fandoms I got involved in the community. Then i have a number of "minor" fandoms that fit one or both of what you're asking. Let's see...

Gundam Wing, X-Men (comicverse), Sailor Moon, Ranma 1/2, half of the Final Fantasy games, Game of Thrones,, Merlin, Mass Effect. - These ones I have never actually got into the canon material.

Final Fantasy and Mass Effect are special cases as I got interest in them due to them being related to another game - Final Fantasy I played and completed FF7 and FF8, played around half of FF4, and bits of 3, 10, 10-2, 12, DoC, KH and KH2, while Mass Effect is a sibling game to Dragon Age due to both being Bioware.

While HP was once my major fandom back in 2003, I currently read fic in it without being active in the fandom.

I might also incidental read a fic here and a fic there based on the latest movies which have come through and I've seen the movies, like I read a little in X-Men around when the first and second movies came out, I've read a bit of Frozen, I have only ever read Pacific Rim crossovers that have imprinted the concept on another fandom (a couple of Middle Earth Fights Kaiju with Jaegers fics).
In a similar case, when I was in SPN I had a fondness for crossovers that crossed with police procedural TV shows, though often they were shows my Mum watches, so I kinda know them about from half-listening to them - shows like NCIS and Criminal Minds.
