Things that meant to make you cry and were successful

(Anonymous) 2015-08-25 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
A few days ago we had a "Things you cry at inappropriately" thread. How about one for all those times your tears were appropriate and desired.

Schindler's List, Requiem for a Dream, and The Fall. I don't cry every time but the first times I watched each of those movies, I cried so hard I couldn't breathe.

+1 except Old Yeller, because I wasn't invested even though I was 4 when I watched it the first time.

Brian's Song (spoilers)

(Anonymous) 2015-08-25 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I mentioned this a month or so ago, but in the new version (with Sean Maher and Mekhi Pfifer), when Brian's cancer is back after his most recent surgery to remove a lung, and he's realized he's probably going to die: After spending the whole movie always answering his wife's "I love you," with a "me, too" he tells her he loves her over and over again because he knows his time to say it is running out.

Tears ahoy.

If I Stay. Tears. Tears everywhere. And I'm not generally a 'this fictional thing made me cry' type person.

I am and yep, just sobbing.

Happy sobbing, because I just love movies that get their hooks in me that deep, but still.

Super embarrassing, but do you know that old song "In the Living Years" about a guy who had a falling out with his father and then expresses regret he never patched it up before his father died? When he sings "I'm sure I heard his echo in my baby's new born tears" it gets me every time since I had a baby myself, and I'm not a very emotional sort of person normally.

There are two musical works that are certain to get the tears flowing for me:

Arvo Pärt: Fratres (Used in Mother Night)
Beethoven: Symphony 7, Second Movement (Used in The Fall and a few other movies.)

The end of Dead Poets Society, all of Toy Story 3, 'We are Groot', I think BBC Sherlock and Doctor Who once or twice, happy tears when Chandler and Monica got engaged, and many more. I cry a lot over fiction I love. Most recently I also bawled my eyes out when Jon Stewart left the Daily Show.

Most things. I could count the exceptions that didn't work way easier than the ones that worked. I'm really easy when it comes to being 'gotten' by sentimental or sad scenes.

Pretty much every Disney/Pixar movie where someone dies.

The Supernatural episode Death's Door. The whole episode was basically designed to be a tear jerker and I definitely cried at it, especially during the part where Bobby talks about how, even though he wanted to be a father deep down, he was too terrified to have children with his wife because he thought that he would turn out like his own father eventually. And the part where the reaper, who clearly respected Bobby even though he made his job difficult, tells him that he was handed an unremarkable life and managed to do something great with it. And the reveal that Bobby's best memory consisted of a movie night with a bickering Sam and Dean. And pretty much everything else tbh

Also: frickin' BingBong, man.

Everything in the history of ever, but the one that sticks out in the last few years is In the Flesh because I cried...probably every episode, sometimes multiple times an episode, and the series one finale had me bawling for about twenty minutes after the episode ended. It was supposed to utterly destroy me, and it did...quite thoroughly. (Not many shows are that devastating.)

And The Last of Us. So many times in The Last of Us. I don't think any other game has made me cry in the first ten-fifteen minutes.

Carl and Ellie in Up. Not helped at all by the fact that I lost both grandparents on my dad's side recently, and seriously not helped at all by this fanvid ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TOmZ66lIzJA ) I saw later, which is their story set to Alan Jackson's 'Remember When'. The plane ticket in particular ... Shit.

I tear up all the time at things meant to tug at your heartstrings

Ordinary People always leaves me a mess. Those damn holiday Folgers commercials. These Hallmark commercials: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fWLXGDgNcVc&index=2&list=PLRKBYUHyyoSoTtFzyPoJvczVGS-y0bAwP

Also, the end of Home Alone - when Kevin runs down the stairs, hoping that his family is back and they aren't there and he turns around and his mom is there.

I tried to rewatch The Land Before Time a while back and started sobbing as soon as Littlefoot hatched. I didn't stop crying for the rest of the movie.

The end of the movie The Accuracy of Death/Sweet Rain/Shinigami no Seido (variant titles).

The song Life on Mars can get me a bit teary. No personal significance, just its melody and mood.
