I'm just generally annoyed by the trend of putting your preferred pronouns in your bio.

Re: Most annoying tumblr bios

(Anonymous) 2015-08-27 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
why?

Re: Most annoying tumblr bios

(Anonymous) 2015-08-27 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

I can't say exactly. Putting the burden of your pronouns on casual acquaintances, and woe be unto them if they mistakenly refer to you incorrectly. Like, between closer friends, I can see telling your inner circle that you want to be known as "____", but it just seems like too much information upfront. Particularly in fandom places where people expect to encounter a majority of one or the other standard.

Re: Most annoying tumblr bios

(Anonymous) 2015-08-27 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
what's wrong with that? pretty basic. unless you're annoyed that it's not obvious on tumblr what someone's gender and preferred gender pronouns are. nothing wrong with old fashioned assumptions about he and she amirite?

Re: Most annoying tumblr bios

(Anonymous) 2015-08-27 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's fine if you're transgender, or any variation of androgynous or genderqueer, or something like that.

It does seem pretentious and unnecessary when it's, well, unnecessary. Say a cis guy, who looks like a guy, dresses like a guy, and still has "he/his" in his bio... then you're just trying to hard to fit in with the SJWs.

Re: Most annoying tumblr bios

(Anonymous) 2015-08-27 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
What about people who don't post selfies and whatnot?

Re: Most annoying tumblr bios

(Anonymous) 2015-08-27 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt Exactly, it's often hard on a blog.

Plus, normalising the idea that you *ask* before you assume, is polite.

I wish people irl would do that before calling my son "she", because he has curls. Or just use "they".

AYRT

Yeah, that makes sense too, if they don't post pictures. I was thinking of people who post selfies looking clearly like one particular gender, are cis, and still put the pronouns in. But I guess there are still cases where they might have reasons to do it.

Re: Most annoying tumblr bios

(Anonymous) 2015-08-27 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
I thought the cis people doing that where trying to make it look normal to support their trans friends. why else would they do that?

Re: Most annoying tumblr bios

(Anonymous) 2015-08-27 06:43 am (UTC)(link)
*is guilty*

I do it to obscure my gender. I'm a straight cis white male. That's no way to navigate the internet at the moment. however when I'm not he, but "hy" it's like a shield. a nice cozy blanket of "Fuck off I'm not one of those privileged assholes!"

Re: Most annoying tumblr bios

(Anonymous) 2015-08-27 06:49 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure 90% of tumblr's "dfab demigirl femmeboy genderfluids" are cis girls trying to be special so...

Re: Most annoying tumblr bios

(Anonymous) 2015-08-27 10:49 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yes it's so hard to be a straight cis white male on the internet at the moment, I quite agree.

Re: Most annoying tumblr bios

IA. I understand representing if you are LGTB, genderqueer, genderfluid, etc. But the whole putting down your cis is really OTT attention needy. Especially if it's a blog that's not even SJW or activist related, which I see a lot, why put it?

Re: Most annoying tumblr bios

(Anonymous) 2015-08-27 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
da

I always thought it was to challenge cis as 'default'.

Not that some of the people who do this kind of thing don't go overboard as allies.

Re: Most annoying tumblr bios

(Anonymous) 2015-08-27 04:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess it could be, it just all comes off as tumblr special snowflake.

Re: Most annoying tumblr bios

(Anonymous) 2015-08-27 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
Attention seeking, really? But seriously why to you is it only trans people who should identify their gender alignment? By only making the "weird" people name their identities it makes the common one invisible and central and normal and unquestioned.

Re: Most annoying tumblr bios

(Anonymous) 2015-08-27 04:43 pm (UTC)(link)
So you're trying to tell me a good portion of tumblr isn't attention seekers? pfft. I said anyone in the LBGT, meaning anyone who isn't cis should feel free to identify. Cis is the social norm, no need to identify it. You don't need a gold star and asspats from your fellow tumblrs for being cis.

I in no way said that LGTB people are "weird", you're projecting and reaching there. Identifying for the LGTB is a part of pride, not of shame. You seem super defensive and really reaching with the "making the common one invisible". Cis people are the mass majority, everybody fucking knows it and people don't need a tumblr profile reminder that that person is the heteronormative.

Re: Most annoying tumblr bios

(Anonymous) 2015-08-27 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
I kind of see where you're coming from? Like, then there's this expectation to some people on tumblr, that, before you interact with ANYBODY even in the most casual of ways, you'll check their profile and memorize it, which, with friends shouldn't be a problem, but like, I'm not going to go through a comment chain to check everyone's profile when "they" can be used as a singular neutral pronoun.

Pretty much, yeah.

This sort of stuff is annoying, though:

"hello there im tomi and welcome to my blog
please use they/them or ze/zir pronouns when referring to me!
read my about page before following"

...why? I wish everyone would do that. It would be easier.

I don't like being misgendered, and it happens a lot, and I'm not even trans, and I imagine it's even more annoying for trans people...why not just put it out there? Or put "female" "male" "agender" whatever.

I mean I get it if it's like deerself pronouns of whatever, those are stupid, but saying "she/her pronouns please" isn't obnoxious; I think it's actually helpful.

Re: Most annoying tumblr bios

(Anonymous) 2015-08-27 09:48 am (UTC)(link)
I find it weird that they don't just put woman/man or W/M or whatever else, if they use he/him or she/her binary pronouns. I'm trans and I put 'man' in my profile cause that's what I am, and obviously men get he/him pronouns. Why should I have to spell that out?

Re: Most annoying tumblr bios

(Anonymous) 2015-08-27 10:11 am (UTC)(link)
That's because "trans" is a new and shiny fetish on tumblr. Most tumblr trans people aren't actually trans or non binary, they just fetishise the "otherness" of being trans.

It was being bi when I was a college kid.

sadly this is true
