I must be reading different Matt's than you. I don't know what other people are doing to his personality, but the ones I've encountered seemed pretty well thought out to me.

Just because a character has little background doesn't mean you can't flesh them out some. Within reason, of course. It makes them more believable and less 2D. It used to scare me to take the minor characters and figure out all the little things that make up the small personality they are given, but now I find it sort of fun, and while I haven't RPed Death Note, I do it in other andoms.

Same here. I've never seen a shitty Mary Sue-style Matt. In fact, most of them are more thought-out than DN main characters in fics/RPs/whatever from what I've seen.
Though I think this person is more pissed at the way Matt fans state their reasoning--it's easier to say "he's a blank slate" than to say "I like it when people expand his personality within reasonable bounds--meaning, keeping in mind the few things that are known--and knowing that I could take a totally different direction with him and not get bitched at for making him OOC."
If I could, I'd type out a huge response to every person who gets upset at his popularity explaining my personal view, but for one, I have other things I need to do, and for two, usually they don't respond (believe me, I've tried, I've just gotten to the point where I've ceased to care.) Bah.

27. I know what you mean. I tend to be very critical of female characters, especially and anime and Japanese games (and especially ESPECIALLY in shounen), and sometimes I really have to make a conscious effort to give one the benefit of the doubt and just accept a show for what it is instead of demanding perfection. It doesn't always work out.

I don't think anyone should get flak for consciously trying to work against their own biases and criticisms - when someone says that they judge characters without bias of gender, I find it incredibly hard to believe them. Everyone makes judgments based on gender. Being aware of it and trying to change it is what's important.

TL;DR: I SUPPORT THIS SECRET. And seriously, this is Hayate no Gotoku. What were you expecting, depth of character?

34. Yeah, basically. But, um, I don't think there's any "good" reason to like a character, and thus no "bad" reasons either. Fanficcers like that he's malleable and can get away with characterizing him any way they want to (within a few parameters) without being attacked for OOC-ness or writing canon Mary-Sues. I don't see anything wrong with that?

Gallery of fail: That's nice, but... wasn't there some sort of peace treaty reached before? Are they doing it again or are these just leftovers from the last post?

You stated that perfectly and I agree. There are plenty of people who only like characters for their looks or only one aspect of their personality, why is Matt any different? Because he's popular? Some of the best fanfics I've read have been ones in which Matt is expanded in a reasonable way, keeping in mind his few canon traits and writing/adding to them. I think what each person does with him and how they interpret his relationships is interesting. I don't understand how that can be seen as a BAD reason to like a character ._.

28. I kind of wanted Geno in there just because I love Super Mario RPG and would have liked some kind of representation for it, but then I found out Issac from Golden Sun is an assist trophy and all my disappointment vanished.

32. I'll be honest, the first thing that came to mind when I saw that picture was "Wait, Marth and Ike are left-handed?" I came to the conclusion that they're ambidextrous since they seem to be using their right hands in other videos/pictures. But yeah, that is an awesome picture. I love the groupings for Subspace Emissary.

29. I used to watch the old cartoon and such. But apparently the new comics suck because Jim Davis is letting other people than himself handle the writing. (I haven't followed the new comics at all but that's what I heard) I usually read my old collections that I got when I was younger.

Are the movies really that bad?

Oh Digimon, how I miss you, Fox Kids (by default, saban-levy), and the old days of Saturday mornings filled with great shows. Pleased to be wanting a DVD release of the dub soon now.

Actually, I remember watching that episode going "AAH! MATT! TAI! WHY ARE YOU FIGHITING?! LISTEN TO THE OTHERS AND STOP PLZ D8". I wish I could find my old tapes of episodes I recorded though....Digimon = great series.
