3. Attraction doesn't automatically equal ideal woman. Not to mention that she doesn't even really look that young. And are you equally pissed at adult women who are attracted to her? Seriously, people are attracted to teenage characters all the time. Why so upset when it happens to this one character? (Hello intarwebs, I am an armchair psychiatrist.)

8. There are lots of fandoms centered around games, TV shows, movies, etc. that have no or little plot. If it exists, someone will build a fandom around it.

22. I've read a few places that in Japan being a muscle-bound macho type is a relatively common gay stereotype. A better reason not to slash them would be because they're, you know, straight. (Though i'll come out right now and admit to being a Goku/Vegeta fan.)

1) I have never come across a female EVA fan that had the hots for Rei.
2) It bothers me particularly with Rei because she is such a huge sex symbol in anime, not because the art is so good and she is drawn so beautifully (she looks even younger than 14, imho, because the art is so childish), but because she let Shinji grab her breast and did nothing. No consent = rape, and it's really disturbing to me that that seems to be the reason she is so fetishized.

5. I hate to be a downer, but I've noticed that a lot of times people really adore in fictional characters what they would never tolerate IRL. Going back to Evangelion, take Asuka. How many guys would put up with a girl that psychotic and cruel? Not very many. Or House. Women swoon over him left and right but IRL? He would break their hearts and leave them sobbing and miserable.

3. Have you ever seen the creepy EVA porn, though? It's almost entirely built upon her incredibly passive and emotionless demeanor and is just ewwww. Also, the porn of the other main female character, Asuka? Even creepier. She strong and vivacious character archetype, and all the porn is about forcing her own submission.

My point, haha, is that it's all character-based, and not just a reaction to their physical appearances.
