Never heard of it until now, but just looked it up. One of the complaints is that it had no black actors, but they're also criticizing it for romanticizing colonialism... wouldn't black actors having fun with white people be doing the same thing?

It does seem like it's in bad taste, though.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-05 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
SA - Okay, actually watched the video. It's really not that bad. They're in Africa and filming a movie. So I kinda agree.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-05 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
If you are going to set something in colonial-era Africa, it would be better to reflect both the existence of black people and the evil of colonialism. But depicting one of those things is still better than depicting neither of them.

Really the best thing to do would be, instead of doing a fucking safari movie shoot or whatever, do an Out of Africa thing instead

that book fucking rules and I would also have expected it to resonate with Tay Tay thematically but idk

(Anonymous) 2015-09-05 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. Because when I watch my Taylor Swift romance music videos, I am looking for political statements about colonial-era Africa~

(Anonymous) 2015-09-05 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Doesn't matter if you're looking for it or not, the politics are there regardless.

Yeah, I agree. People on the internet like to make a big stink about everything.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-05 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Fantastic song.

Just going to ignore the video either way

Just watched the video. Man, Scott Eastwood is so good looking. I will be very sad when he shrivels up like his dad. But right now, dayum.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-05 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Clint Eastwood looked damn good when he was younger tbh

Yeah, but now... That man spent way to much time in the sun filming Westerns.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-05 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
He's 85! I think that's a bigger factor now than UV damage!

Oh, yes!

Let's get this out of the way

(Anonymous) 2015-09-05 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
We're all aware Nicki Minaj was deliberately subtweeting her right.

Re: Let's get this out of the way

(Anonymous) 2015-09-05 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I dunno, the first criticism I saw was on NPR's site. So I don't think it's just Nicki Minaj trying to start something.

Re: Let's get this out of the way

(Anonymous) 2015-09-05 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I think she was subtweeting her in that she was trying to get her to speak out about it and side with her, but taylor took it as an attack against her instead.

Oh my god.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-06 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
Well it glorifies colonial-Africa (which is an incredibly horrible time in history and accounts for many of Africa's problem's today). But of course this is fandomsecrets, so people will just be "look at the pretty white guy!"

(Anonymous) 2015-09-06 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
That's what I'm trying to say, but... well, see upthread.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-06 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
People will go through the most elaborate mental gymnastics in the world to defend white people no matter what they do.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-06 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
Yup

No. It glorifies 1950s Hollywood, a distinction which is lost on people because scenery is offensive.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-06 05:01 pm (UTC)(link)
It glorifies 1950s Hollywood glorifying colonialism. The glorifying of colonialism is a level removed, but that doesn't mean that it's not there.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-06 07:19 am (UTC)(link)
Not even getting into the video, but I can't listen to the song without hearing Lana Del Rey's song Without You.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-06 02:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, it was racist? I completely missed that. I was too busy rolling my eyes at the trite "romantic" bullshit where the girl pined after the boy because... something. I didn't care enough to listen. Good lord that was a boring song.

Fuck, do I sound white. -.-
