Re: What questions do you have?

Why do people whine about how terrible tumblr is but then continue to use it, rather than start keeping up with their blogs/journals/whatever? If SO MANY people hate it, you'd think they'd be able to create their own community elsewhere.

That's not how society works, homie

Critical mass is a hell of a thing

tumblr the site isn't tumblr the people is my guess

"tumblr" is used as shorthand for "the tumblr sjw crowd" or the prevailing social crowd on a site

exactly like "4chan" is often used to signify "the idiots in /b/ and /pol/ et cetera" by people who happily browse /a/ and /y/

Exactly.

I've seen a lot of people hate tumblr the site too, mostly due to lack of commenting threads and the like.

Yeah but those people are usually the ones not on it. The people who complain about the crowd and those that complain about the site don't have much overlap, because the ones annoyed by the crowd are the ones who are on the site to experience it

Lots of the people who complain about tumblr the site have a tumblr to browse image posts but hate how the rest of it works and never join any communities or social groups, for example

It really isn't that easy to create a website. Especially one to host thousands of people.

Surely that aspect of things is pretty much a solved problem?

... and then you have to convince enough people to actually use it, which can be even harder.

It's a vicious cycle. No one has their own communities or posts fandom things to places like LJ or DW because they don't think anyone'll be interested, but people who are interested don't have an outlet either, so they also just go to tumblr.

Plus, tumblr's part of the new generation of the internet that hasn't even really heard of communities as "oldbies" knew it. I'm not saying there aren't a lot of "oldbies" who've moved onto tumblr, there are, but there's also people who really have no idea there used to be a whole world outside of it. (The same way a lot of people on LJ don't seem aware that forums and websites used to be a thing.)

I whine about Tumblr, and I don't (well, very rarely) use it, but I also don't keep up with my journal. Oops.

I'm not really motivated to since I don't think the actual journal platforms will become big again...BUT if fandom ever migrates to a better platform, or looks like it might do so, I will be all about doing my part to get that off the ground. I'd love a kind of hybrid journal/blog platform that features the best of both worlds.

+1. And I do kind of wish I had the tech skills and money to make that happen, and the connections to make it marketable.

I suspect they're a small portion of the crowd. Tumblr has, what, it was more than 30 million active accounts?
