It's a vicious cycle. No one has their own communities or posts fandom things to places like LJ or DW because they don't think anyone'll be interested, but people who are interested don't have an outlet either, so they also just go to tumblr.

Plus, tumblr's part of the new generation of the internet that hasn't even really heard of communities as "oldbies" knew it. I'm not saying there aren't a lot of "oldbies" who've moved onto tumblr, there are, but there's also people who really have no idea there used to be a whole world outside of it. (The same way a lot of people on LJ don't seem aware that forums and websites used to be a thing.)
