This usually happens in comedy, though I've seen it played for drama as well: When characters act like sociopaths just for comedic/dramatic effect. Especially if it's young characters because somehow the creators think young people are all evil - even some of the most vile kids I knew in school would not act as bad as the nice characters on Glee sometimes did. I know Glee is hardly the best poster for believable characterization anyway, but I've seen this elsewhere too.

The exception is of course if it's intended, like Jenna on 30 Rock. I'm not talking about characters like that, I mean characters who've never previously been shown to being selfish assholes being selfish assholes out of nowhere.

the worst part is, sometimes, i wonder if i've somehow lucked out my entire life and only met decent people and in reality, most people are more like they show them in tv

i don't like doubting humanity like that
