Healthy Desserts that don't taste like shit

(Anonymous) 2015-09-05 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Are these a thing? Are there any candies that are healthier than others?

I like fruit bars!

I don't know if they're healthy per se (probably sill with lots of sugar) but you can get them made with real fruit so you're putting something other than shit in your body.

Another idea is to only buy desserts in small portions. I get these little ice cream cups that are $1 at the store I go to with their rewards card, and eat one, and be done, and it's less ice cream than I'd eat if I scooped it out of a carton.

Do you have a recipe for fruit bars?

Puree whatever fruit you like, add some sugar or honey and let it dissolve, freeze the resultant fruit goop in little plastic or paper cups with a popsicle stick in them. Run them under warm water for a couple seconds to get them out of the cups if you have trouble. You can also add plain yogurt, or honey, or some lemon or lime juice, or leave some larger bits of fruit in for texture.

No, sorry! I buy them. I don't think they'd be hard to make though! Maybe anon's recipe will be good! (heh, maybe I should try it!)

To spin off of this one, what are some that are also somewhat filling?

And of course I assume OP and I mean really healthy, not "this has ZERO FAT and totally not fake fruit" healthy.

Just plain fruit? Like, fresh berries, pineapple slices, w/e.

Also sorbet is not good, healthier than ice cream I think? You can even make it yourself if you have an ice cream machine.

*Sorbet is good

(I mixed up the words "not bad" and "good" in my mind)

Well sort of, but they contain quite a bit of sugar. When you're making sorbet at home, you can't cut down the sugar too much or it will freeze too hard and you'll end up with a popsicle rather than sorbet.

Well it should be still in moderation, but you can cut down on the sugar some when its homemade (I have done it cause I don't like mine too sweet), and maybe you could substitute with stevia? I have never done that so I don't know if that would also mess with consistency, but yeah.

That said a fruit juice popsicle also sounds like a nice dessert, and wouldn't be super time consuming to make!

Applesauce is delish. Some people like dark chocolate which mostly consists of cocoa stuff. Idk... dryed fruit?
There's this baking recipe for cottage cheese, eggs and apples, but, you know, ~cooking~.

Seconding sorbet. Sherbet, too, one of those has more sugar than the other I forget which. Espresso granita! Add sugar substitute.

Apple slices and natural peanut butter are usually a healthy option. Add cinnamon to the peanut butter, nuke in microwave for a few seconds till it's liquid enough to dip the slices in.

Unsweetened natural applesauce and homemade custard.

Banana slices fried in apple juice (instead of butter).

Hmm I just saw you specified "candies" you can find natural/reduced/no-sugar gummi candy in the diabetics' section but IDK what it's like. This is a healthy recipe version of this, which is a healthy...ish(?) candy bar option. Not sure about any others. Lindt Dark Cacao bars are supposedly healthy but I'm not a fan of the taste. ymmv

Greek yogurt (vanilla) + protein granola is good. Add sliced fresh fruit to make it taste like a parfait

Eh. Flavored yogurt tends to be absolutely loaded with added sugars, particularly nonfat yogurt, because companies up the sugar to make up for the lack of fat. Granola is basically an excuse for stealth sugar and fat intake, too. I'm definitely not a healthy eater, or healthy in general, and I'm fat. But still, honestly, fruit and plain full fat yogurt, or just fruit, are better options, and if you want fruit and ice cream just fucking eat fruit and ice cream. If you want to be healthy, keep it to one 1/4 cup serving of ice cream to, like, a cup of fruit.

...that's why you get greek yogurt (for the added protein, which is more filling) with only basic vanilla and protein granola, not the sugary kind. Obviously it's a good idea in general to check your labels but how did you get "sugar loaded dessert yogurt and sugary fatty granola" out of what I said?

??? That's like assuming that by "fruit" everyone means "fruit with sugar sprinkled on top and covered in chocolate"

http://www.lightandfit.com/light-yogurt/light-and-fit-greek/vanilla = 7g sugar, 12g protein

1 medium sized apple = 19g sugar

Eh, I've never heard of protein granola until just now, but when I googled it, the brands I looked at, which were the first couple results, still listed sugar as the second ingredient after oats. And the yogurt you linked has water and sugar as the second and third ingredients after cultured milk, plus there's a thickener in there (the modified cornstarch.) So it's not exactly yogurt. I'd rather use a smaller amount of actual greek yogurt that's nothing but strained regular yogurt, rather than pay for sugar water, thickening agents, and the illusion of pending thinness. If I'm gonna eat junk food, and I do, I'd rather eat junk that was honest about being junk, and save my virtuous eating for fruit and veggies.

Ugh. I'm sorry, but that's precisely the kind of yogurt I dislike. Every yogurt that's "light" and low fat or non fat has sugar to make up for its lack of flavor from butterfat, and the "greek yogurt" label is really misleading. For a much better tasting yogurt, go with one made from whole milk at least, which tastes better and requires far less sweetener.

- (Unsweetened) yoghurt and berries.
- a square or two of dark chocolate and some frozen grapes (frozen they taste like icy candy)
- Melons/passionfruit/custard apple. All are ridiculously delicious.
- a crunchy low GI cookie
- a hot chocolate sweetened with stevia
- basically, any single serve desserts that fit into your daily calorie needs

Banana ice cream is good, I've heard. The kind where you just basically process a frozen banana with some cocoa powder.

Honestly, not really. Not unless people are waaaaaaaaay into fruit salads or plain fruit. I don't think desserts do well when people economize on fat and sugar, just go ahead and make something amazing and eat a smaller portion.

This. It's a dessert. If you're going to eat dessert, then just go ahead and eat a dessert. Just don't eat a huge amount of it.
