I have a deep and abiding hatred for characters who say things that are technically true, carefully leave out details to create the wrong impression, and then blame the other party for being fooled because they technically didn't "lie." Fairies are very common for this trope, to the point that some stories base their entire culture on ripping everyone else off with bad deals.

Well according to some legends, fairies are incapable of lying so I guess some authors just follow that rule. Still is a bit of a tired trope, but at least it has a legendary background.
