Well, that does seem incredibly irrational and overly vehement, but you admitted that, so I don't really have anything else to say.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-09 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, i kinda get it. Wouldn't say i hate them exactly, but i usually think they're pretty boring.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-09 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a hate-on for evil that's evil for no reason, so usually I hate fairies too. I don't mind when no reason is given for an asshole being an asshole and we're left to assume reasons exist, but when it's outright stated they're assholes because lol they're born that way and that's how they are, I stop reading

Are fairies always evil in urban fantasy? They seem like something that could go either way - most things I've encountered with fairies have them mostly good, maybe with a few evil fairies (but the evil ones are the EVIL ones, not the norm for fairies).

I'll take the Crawling Chaos any day.

Modern-day Lovecraftverse would be amazing.

Persona 2 falls under urban fantasy and has the Crawling Chaos as a main antagonist, iirc. I'm not sure if traditional literature labels apply to games after they've been categorized by gameplay, though.

Interesting that fairies would be popular with urban fantasy. I always associate them with forests and gardens and other mostly outdoor or rural type places.

I'm just here to comment on how gorgeous the art is and how silver haired dude can get it.

As for the fairies themselves, well, it really depends on the specific interpretation.

IIRC from... DeviantArt, maybe... this is meant to be Hades and Persephone.

Relavent to your icon: My first thought looking at the secret was "Melkor talking to Yavanna?". Though I admit, I don't usually imagine Melkor with white hair (Mandos on the other hand... well that was influenced by Final Fantasy 7).

I understand that if it's those books that focus on the fae, but in at least most of the urban fantasy I read they are not the main antagonists. Or even antagonists at all. They might feature sometimes, or be dangerous to mess with or even speak to, but not as antagonists. Just because there ways are not the ways of man.

I get it. There are a lot of badly written fairy things out there, especially with the addition of teen literature suddenly thinking it's romantic, but by disliking them totally, you're losing out on a lot of good things.

Here's two series though that are urban fantasy and don't feature fairies (as far as I've read):
Kate Daniels and Alex Verus

I think that still falls in what OP is thinking. They're annoying assholes, but also dangerous so they never see any comeuppance. They're always in the story even though they're not important characters. A lot of people don't like that kind of character.

I have a deep and abiding hatred for characters who say things that are technically true, carefully leave out details to create the wrong impression, and then blame the other party for being fooled because they technically didn't "lie." Fairies are very common for this trope, to the point that some stories base their entire culture on ripping everyone else off with bad deals.

Trickster characters are annoying as fuck. It looks like a lot of people agree with the faerie hate

I don't care for faeries either. I was putting up with it in the case of Kelley Armstrong's new books, since I like her other stuff, but god damn the love triangle bullshit is annoying. If it ends in a polyamorous resolution, where Olivia bangs Ricky and Gabriel I'll be so annoyed.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-10 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
Your reading preferences don't have to be rational, though. While I don't share your antipathy toward fairies, I can sympathize... they tend to be in a LOT of urban fantasy.

If you want to read about Nyarlathotep ('s followers/worshippers) attempting to bring about the end of the world, and if you also like gay sex, might I suggest the Whyborne and Griffin series (Book 1: Widdershins) by Jordan Hawk for some fun Victorian fantasy/horror with buttsex.

I really like fairies. But I really dislike the way that they are written most of the time.

I feel you. I love traditional fantasy but something about urban fantasy really annoys me. I guess fairies in traditional fantasy, I could maybe deal with. But fairies in urban fantasy just seem so dumb to me. I haven't yet read a book in the genre that I've liked, and pretty sure the vast majority of them did include fairies.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-10 04:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my god thank you, I hate them so much too. The cute little fluttering winged kind who are there mostly to look pretty perched on a flower, sure, gimme those. But I've never read a version of the Seelie/Unseelie trickster sociopath kind that I didn't despise and wish the author would get over their edgy-boner for.

Pish. The Man with Thistledown Hair (esp as played by Marc Warren) is awesome.
