This looks like the 60s horror movie version and 80s action movie version of Doctor Who characters. D:

Early 70s and mid-90s, to be more precise, but that's actually pretty much exactly what it is

HUZZAH! At least they totally got what they were aiming for.

Delgado VS Ainley is a well known debate, but Roberts is so "I'll be back" Terminator like. He's great though because he's in the same movie as Eight.

Eight <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

I don't even really have any other comment tbh, I just really love Eight.

<3

He's so excitable and huggable.
He's the most likely to loose memory of all the Doctor regenerations too. It's a curse.

Why is this a secret? Feel no shame, OP!

Tell me OP because I really wanna know: what do you like about Eric Roberts' Master??

I became aware of *some* small redeeming qualities when I listened to a Verity! podcast where one of the casters was set a challenge to mount a defense of him in two minutes. *lol*

Not the OP, but! I've been meaning to rewatch the movie, but I had the hypothesis a while back that Roberts!Master's got sillier/campier when he was winning ("I always DREZZZZ for the occasion," "as WELL as you"), while his more humorless, Terminator-cosplaying moments was when he was 'losing,' and therefore fixated on his goals (like...pretty much every other moment, but especially any conversation with Chang Lee).

It sort of makes sense: he's on his last life, so he's going to be ruthless and cutting right to the chase. But he's still the Master, so when he feels like he CAN waste time by rubbing his victory in the Doctor's face, he absolutely will. I don't that's deliberate, mind you, more of the acting choices of Eric Roberts that coincidentally complimented the writing in the script, but only in decent lighting. :P

I will defend the "as WELL as you" and "life is wasted on the living" scenes, though. Those are great.

Good points :D I will have to rewatch this film soon with this in mind.

Like I said, I'm pretty sure that most of that is completely accidental. I just think that the Roberts Master is a LOT more enjoyable than people give him credit for.

(Note that I said enjoyable, and not 'good.')

That whole exchange with "As WELL as you" and the ambulance suddenly breaking was pretty cute.

Also the (Masterless) "Step aside or I'll shoot myself" bit right after is one of my favorite momnents in all of Who. It's such a Doctor-y thing to do.

Well, it's because he's...

(Anonymous) 2015-09-11 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
...ERIC FREAKING ROBERTS!!!

Also, he's sort of over the top. I think he wears a cape like Marvel's Dr. Strange at one point.

Hah, he does, doesn't he! Time Lord robes and collars are a bit like Dr. Strange.

(though imo, being eric roberts doesn't really get you points. i've heard he's a massive dickbag)

The thing about the Roberts!Master is the context. He would be a bad fit in terms of the tone and serial structure of the Classic Series. But that's not what the TV movie is. It's consciously trying to separate itself from that, and do things in a more "modern" style (more like the style of films of the time), and for a joint US-UK audience, many of whom were extremely unfamiliar with the 'verse.

Eric Roberts also succeeds in the most crucial quality of the Master, which is to come across as enjoying thwarting the Doctor. You have to have a good time playing the Master! He gets humor, but he also gets some good creepy material. The scene in the bedroom with the EMT guy's wife is still a pretty good horror moment, despite dated fx. I also REALLY like the idea of his taking Chang Lee as a Master's foil to the traditional Doctor + Companion.

Eight's Master and Ten's Master are my favorites (both old and young versions) but I admit I haven't seen Old Who Master in context.

For a split second, I thought the guy on the right was supposed to be Wesker.

ERIC ROBERTS WAS ON DOCTOR WHO?!?!?!!!?!
