It sort of is a blanket statement though.

It's not your job to intervene if you're in a public area that has staff or security you could report the issue to if it's an immediate concern.

The thing I was talking about specifically happened to a friend on the bus though. She sits in priority seating, which she does need because she's legally disabled. A couple approached her and told her to move and verbally abused her, and when she wouldn't move, the woman pushed her off the seat.

If someone had a problem, they could have responded by speaking to the driver. They could have ignored her. They could have sat further back in the bus.
They still felt like they were in the right, though.

I'm so disgusted by anyone with this attitude that they can act like this because they feel they're enforcing an existing standard or something.

The reason I think a blanket statement is wrong is because, as written, it would also apply if someone had stepped in to defend your friend and told this couple to fuck off.

If they'd gone with option A though and reported the situation to the driver, it might have been resolved before my friend got hurt.

You don't want a society where people stay silent when they see disturbing things, or else have to escalate to calling authorities. That's not a cohesive society.

Saying, well just get Big Daddy to sort it out strips even more responsibility for each other from citizens, it's not always warranted to get authorities involved, sometimes it isn't something illegal but still fucked up, sometimes there are no authorities around anyway, and for some populations, avoiding getting authorities involved is safest anyway.

We need to take more responsibility and care for each other, not just keep our heads down or report others to authorities, that sounds authoritarian to me, where people's morals are only dictated by what they think can get away with, or pretend to not see - that is NOT the polar opposite of someone resorting to pushing a disabled person off their seat, you know.
