08. [SPOILERS for X-Files (new series)]

When the original X-Files series came out, TPTB said they wouldn't hook up, and they eventually did. Just because they might not be together at the beginning of the reboot doesn't mean it won't eventually happen if the show lasts.

I wouldn't get your hopes up.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-11 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
You are not alone. I don't ship them either.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-11 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Pfft.

I know you don't ship them but... what's the harm?
Imo their chemistry is insane and I've only watched a few seasons. Plus if the actors are down with it... why not?

The only reason they're not together in the upcoming miniseries is so they can get together. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)✧

Dude, haven't you heard of "noromo"? The fandom was always divided between "relationshippers" (later shortened to "shippers") and "no romance". At least half the fandom hates them together and is very glad they're over that awfulness. I just hope it sticks this time.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-11 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
And don't forget we merry band of fencesitters!

(Anonymous) 2015-09-12 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Ah yes, the noromo. Also backwards for "O Moron". Let's dance, bitches.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-12 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
ppl who say "no romo" should be fed into woodchippers

(Anonymous) 2015-09-12 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
Um...I'm a pretty hardcore Mulder/Scully shipper, but seriously? You sound like you really need to work on your capacity to live and let live.

Unless you just mean that it's a stupid sounding word. In which case, yeah, it kinda is.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-11 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I will respectfully disagree.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-12 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm definitely on the opposite side of the fence on this. When I learned that they were going to be split up for the revival, I was like, "Welp, there goes any smidgen of hope I had that this wasn't going to suck!"

The funny thing is, I do think that their relationship was handled badly in the show when they finally did get together. I don't think Chris Carter and Co. had any idea how to write rich, complex personal and interpersonal lives for their characters. They (CC especially) always seemed to have an incredibly simple and rather normative understanding of what two people being in love entailed. So when he finally "gave in" to the push for them to be together romantically, he did it incredibly badly, because that was all he understood romance to be. (Probably why he didn't want to put them together in the first place; because he simply couldn't conceive of their being in love as something that would expand on what they already were to each other. In the hands of a more emotionally intelligent writer it could so easily have been amazing and complex and awesome, but I think CC could only imagine romance/sex as something that would limit and dumb down their relationship.)

But even so, as far as I'm concerned, by S7, Scully and Mulder had essentially become pair-bonded (or whatever else you want to call two people who are going to stay together because they share too much and know each other too deeply and their shared passions and experiences have ultimately tied them together irrevocably). So for CC to think he can turn around now, and pretend like they were just another ill-matched couple who gave it a go but couldn't make it work and ultimately decided to split up? That just doesn't jibe with anything I hold to be true about them and their relationship. It's just so horribly pedestrian.

I'm confused. I heard the new X-Files show was going to restart the series as if nothing from the original series ever happened. Is that incorrect? Is it actually a continuation of the original series with a big timeskip?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-12 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's a complete restart. I've been making zero effort to learn about the revival, because I can't imagine being anything but disappointed. So I suppose it's possible they're doing a complete restart. Even though that makes no sense and will never work.

I'd like to think CC and Co. aren't daft enough to believe that's a good idea, but, well, it is Chris Carter; he also thought running the Brady Bunch episode right after the episode where Scully gives up her baby was a solid decision.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-12 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
SA

I think it's a lot more likely that whoever said it was going to be a "restart" meant that Mulder and Scully were going to be back at the FBI solving cases like they did throughout most of the series (rather than living on the run, or in rural whereveritwas with Scully working as a surgeon and Mulder holed up in his nostalgia-cave).

I was one of those fence-sitters with a side order of endgame and also shipping Mulder/Krycek. In the context of the show, I thought it'd be fine if they got together in the last episode but not before that.

Predictably, CC took the really well-written tension and chemistry and turned it into utter unwatchability. But then, I felt that about the entire show.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-12 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)
The thing is, kind of the whole reason that I dislike them being together romantically (in addition to how horribly it was done on the actual show) is because I think they were essentially pair-bonded in a non-romantic sense far, far earlier than that, and I think their fundamental existential connection would still exist regardless of whether they were fucking each other, not fucking each other, each fucking someone else, or whatever.

So, to me, it might not have worked out romantically, but it makes sense to me for them to still be as important to each other as they always were. Because it was never about romance or about sexual attraction.

You act like it's not going to be a mild bump in the road before they get back together. I guarantee it's not going to last.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-12 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Writers tend to consider getting together (or getting together again) more interesting than ongoing relationships. It makes sense that they'd be split up so it can be "more interesting" to watch them get back together again.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-12 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I agree completely with you that putting them together on the original run of the show was a mistake. A huge part of the series was their chemistry, yes, but I always thought they were more interesting as unlikely partners and friends. When they did get together, it was actually rather boring.

I shipped them but in a completely fucked-up dysfunctional way. So, IMO, here's how their ship should've sailed--they should've had hot urgent OMG I can't believe you almost died (or were abducted or whatever) sex and then NEVER TALKED ABOUT IT AGAIN. They could've thought about it, obsessed even, but never talked about it (ESPECIALLY not with each other) again. Because if there's one thing The X-Files stressed, it was the power we give to an issue when we don't talk about it. Secrets have power. (I'm a WASP, we understand these things ;)

(Anonymous) 2015-09-12 06:26 am (UTC)(link)
Interesting. Out of curiosity, in your scenario would they truly only ever have sex once? Or would it be just the once for a long time and then eventually something more happens? Or would it be more sort of open ended, where maybe they eventually get onto the same page and have a relationship, but you (the viewer) never know for sure whether it will happen or not?

I can do fucked-up and dysfunctional, but I think if they only ever had sex once, personally I couldn't go for it. At the very least I would need hope for the future.

Out of curiosity, have you read Iolokus, Khyber vs. Season 7, or pretty much anything by RivkaT? None of them have exactly the scenario you described for your headcanon (KvsS7 would be the closest), but if you love fucked-up and dysfunctional those are the first fics that spring to mind.

I hope they don't get together either, though that's because I'm a Mulder/Krycek fan.
