I like both Sam and Dean, but you're right: the side chars are making it fun, despite heavy handed plots and (almost) eternally brooding main chars. (But Cas though? The actor seems nice in RL, but the character? Blech.)

I really liked Cas in seasons 4 and 5. Then I hated him in 6. And I've hated him in the few later episodes I've watched as well.

Yes, I like the actor who plays Castiel well enough, but the character himself? No. I liked Castiel when he first showed up, but I feel like his fandom popularity has contributed to the Wolverine syndrome of over-use and over-exposure, and I'm so tired of the character that it's morphed into dislike.

I can never understand how anyone can stand to watch this show if they don't like Sam and Dean, or worse, if they used to like them but stopped. They're in like 90% of it! Do you just wait for summaries or something to know which episodes to skip, or? Bobby was a major character who was in it about a zillion times more than anyone else you mention, so I could maybe see watching for him, but not the others. I liked maybe half or a quarter of the characters on Lost overall and almost none of them by that godawful finale, but that was a real ensemble piece with lots of centrics about those I did love, and sometimes the dumbest centrics still had good stuff with other characters. If it had been mostly Jack and Kate driving around in a car, Jack and Kate talking about/refusing to talk about their feelings, Jack and Kate working cases, Jack and Kate having big fights and horrible codependence and dying and resurrecting each other over and over, NO FUCKING THANKS. Worst roadtrip ever. I would have bailed in the first season, right out onto the highway, lol. Good on you for knowing when to quit. So many people don't.

Not OP

I love Sam and Dean for the people they used to be, and that's why I still watch it. They've killed far too many people for me to like them anymore, but in the meantime I've really fallen in love with the universe and the side characters. (I hated Castiel in the past, but I really started to like him last season.)

I really like how Heaven and Hell is portrayed on the show, and the use of magic in an urban setting.

So yeah, even though I mostly just accept Sam and Dean at this point, I will watch the show until the end.

Not OP either. But the heaven/hell droning is the worst part! I want to get the urban legend themes back. Frights and fun and very little angst. (I have fanfic for that.)

Hehe, we're completely different. :) The Monster of the week episodes really bore me. My dream season is a season that is 100% mytharc!

(Anonymous) 2015-09-12 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh, I guess it shows that someone knows what they're doing then, as we're both still watching it. ;)

(Anonymous) 2015-09-12 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Then you, sir, are my nemesis

(Anonymous) 2015-09-12 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. Angel politics? Bureaucratic Hell? It's cumbersome at best, and even so, most of the time, it's not working at its best in the show. Monster-of-the-week had more variety.

Same. If you don't like the main characters and the 'side' characters get very little air time, what's the point?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-13 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
If I'm being honest, I don't care too much for Sam. I've never really been able to get into his character despite how interesting some of his story lines have been. I think it might be the actor. I like Dean a lot, however I can get damned sick of their relationship from time to time. Honestly the biggest reason I'm still watching is for Castiel. I love his character and I firmly believe he's the best and most consistently written. I'll keep watching as long as he's there.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-12 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
The side characters are the best! I like to say that Sam and Dean are the meat of the show, but the side characters are the flavor.

Rowena! Crowley! Metatron! Those are some very good characters.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-12 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I hated her character.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-12 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Charlie died? Good, I can start watching again.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-13 08:28 am (UTC)(link)
Found the misogynist!

(Anonymous) 2015-09-13 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)
If disliking a poorly written character who talks in memes is misogyny, I'm terrified I have got some MRAs to apologize to.

Oh, well, eh? Maybe you can go find something you actually like, now.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-13 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
I'm the same, OP.

Well, except the not liking Dean part, I've always loved that character. Over the past several seasons, I have come to genuinely hate Sam - so much so that I basically fast forward through his scenes if there's not another character I enjoy in it. And while I don't mind Cas, it's pretty clear that the writers don't care for his character, have no idea what to do with him, and are only keeping him around because they like the actor and maybe even because they're a little scared of his fanbase.

But I genuinely loved the side characters. I adored Kevin and Charlie, I loved Benny and Abbadon and Linda Tran and Bobby. Even the one off characters can be fascinating - Maggie and Don Stark, Aaron Bass, Henry Winchester. Despite the quickly declining quality of the show, I've stuck around because I enjoy the mythology and the side characters. But now...

Charlie's death was atrocious - just horribly written, made no sense, and was gross as fuck, (When one of your lead actors calls it bullshit and the creator gets booed at Comic Con, something is wrong there.) It appears that there will be no real storyline for Dean in season eleven other than looking after Sam (we're back to Samnatural, I guess). The quality has dropped down to barely coherent...

Hopefully I can finally drop this show now.
