Times you bit your tongue

(Anonymous) 2015-09-12 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Was going through the grocery store salad bar behind a kid today. He put a few grilled chicken pieces on his salad and rounded the bend to the other side when his mom started harassing him because "you need more meat!" and wouldn't shut up until he started piling those shitty pressed-meat cubes of ham and turkey onto his greens all the while looking like it was the last thing he wanted.

I really really wanted to speak up for this kid and his mother's clear ignorance but I didn't. Because 1) it's not my business how parents feed their kids, and 2) I also recognized that I was totally judging her for being a fat pig of a woman, which I have NO ROOM to judge on, being obese myself. But I still feel bad about biting my tongue.

Yep, none of your business. Keep your judgement to yourself, that kid is in no way being abused, even if you think you know and disapprove of his mother's lifestyle.

Did I say he was being abused? No, I fucking did not.

Being concerned enough to interfere in a parent's parenting means you think that child is suffering in a serious way, yes?

If you don't think the child is suffering seriously, then know that it is absolutely NEVER your place to tell a stranger parent where to go; it is the height of arrogance and rudeness.

Your first statement is flawed. Your second is correct and also why I didnt say anything. So stop trying to give me morality lessons.

At a lounge with coworkers the other day, and they got off on a tangent about the militarization of young men... replete with claims like "no one over 30 joins the military" and that it "preys on uneducated youth".

My SO is attempting to join the military, and she's a 33 year old woman with a Master's. I just was like "welp" and decided I should pick my battles, preferably at a moment when everyone wasn't a little drunk.

Re: Times you bit your tongue

(Anonymous) 2015-09-12 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes I wish I could have joined the military. But some of my earliest memories are of my mom crying and begging my brother to not re-up, and I let that really effect my choices in life. And now I'm too fat (and probably too opinionated) and almost too old to do it.

Never too late, anon. If that's your dream and you've got a special skillset, you're probably more likely to be accepted than you think.

Sadly, I have no special skillsets, will be 33 next month and am so so far from approaching fitness standards, I think it's a ship that sailed. But thanks for the encouragement! :)

I occasionally toy with the idea of going reserves. I've got the skill set to get one of the more interesting postings, and it'd let me explore that constant wonder of what life would be like if I suceeded in joining as per my original career intention.

p.s. life and career tip. When you're a little drunk is always the best time to have challenging conversations.

Not with my coworkers, really. They trend heavily and passionate toward the animal rights side of veganism, and being academics the only way to argue with them safely is totally sober with facts and research.

Which I appreciate, don't get me wrong.

Ugh. I have a lot of thoughts on the military, but she clearly hasn't done her research. If you are going to criticize something (and there are legit criticisms of the military), do your research and know what you are talking about.

Mine would be anytime I look up and sell books about politics/current affairs to customers. Sometimes some of those customers have felt the need to spout their opinions at me and I just kind of ignore it and try to move things along.

Granted, I'm supposed to, because we're not really supposed to get into political debates with customers in the first place. But damn, sometimes it's REALLY hard to hold my tongue with some people all the same. Especially if they're saying something really offensive and nonsensical, and speak in a way that they think I'll logically/naturally agree with them. Hell, no.

Every single Christmas when we go over to my grandmother's house and she spends the next five hours talking nonstop about how the Asians and the gays are invading.

Pretty much every time I talk with my grandmother. She's almost always going off on some racist, sexist, or homophobic rant or some other right winged nutjob rant.

My dad when he talks about abortion or sexuality. He's very progressive on economics, gender, and race, but he's really homophobic for religious reasons and strongly pro-life. And he doesn't listen. He's willing to disagree slightly on something, but if I disagree strongly on something he won't debate, he'll rant. So I just keep my mouth shut.

People shouldn't have to debate eith ypu over every opinion. Biting ypur tongue is a good call here.

Personally, I think hate speech should be called out on, haters don't have a right to freedom from criticism. Unless you're trying to be tactful for peace's sake. I've walked a pretty difficult line being gay with a very homophobic grandmother.

My dad and I usually enjoy having debates/discussions on things, though. We've had some really good debates on some things, it is just those particular issues he won't discuss with anyone other than to forcefully state his opinion, and he doesn't realize or care that his views are offensive.
