I think it's that way with any long runner, especially ones read in your youth. Endings can also make or break a series. I remember loving a 10-book length series, and it got to the last two books. Book 9 was meh and book 10 was AWFUL. It breaks your heart.

But it doesn't discount the fact you read the other books, and something in them definitely touched you. Even if they don't live up to the standards you'd given them.

Hey, still better than Twilight, right?

hah, going by what one hears about Twilight fandom, it was exactly like this. It was many people's first fandom and they were blown away by the fic until they preferred it over canon.
