I think it's that way with any long runner, especially ones read in your youth. Endings can also make or break a series. I remember loving a 10-book length series, and it got to the last two books. Book 9 was meh and book 10 was AWFUL. It breaks your heart.

But it doesn't discount the fact you read the other books, and something in them definitely touched you. Even if they don't live up to the standards you'd given them.

Hey, still better than Twilight, right?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-13 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
hah, going by what one hears about Twilight fandom, it was exactly like this. It was many people's first fandom and they were blown away by the fic until they preferred it over canon.

Weird, I'm the opposite: I still absolutely adore the books, but I've lost almost all interest in the fandom and fanfic, I find almost all of it idiotic and not remotely related to anything even close to what I loved about the books.

That's happened to me with a bunch of old fandoms, especially ones I was really crazy about. I think that a lot of stuff doesn't quite hold up when you're not riding the fandom wave of emotion.

do you have any recs for HP fics that hold up or which you still like?
I read a few HP fics (I mostly got Harry/Draco recs) but they were rather samey.

DH killed my love for HP pretty effectively, so I never went back to re-read, but sometimes I wonder if the books would hold up if I were to do so now. Though I do go back to some of my old favourite fanfics sometimes, and that's been working out okay so far.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-13 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
That last book was clunky. I sensed she was at the end of her interest and wanted to move on, which is why it got so long. Editing takes more effort and thought than churning it out.

My favourite was Half Blood Prince, although Prisoner of Azkabhan was close.

Half Blood Prince nearly did it for me. I really, really hated that book. But DH actually brought back the love. I really liked that one.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-13 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Could also just be that your tastes have changed, more than you having liked the fanfic more back then; however, I DO think fic and fandom in general influenced our reactions to and feelings about the books. I don't think I cared that much about the Marauders initially, but I read a few fics and suddenly they were the real heroes of the series. So there you go.

[personal profile] poisonenvy 2015-09-13 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
How far did you reread? I know every time I reread Harry Potter it's always kind of a struggle to get through the first couple of books, but they get better the more you read.

OP

(Anonymous) 2015-09-13 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
All of them. I remembered loving GOF and DH the best, so I kept thinking it would get better. It did a bit, but the style still didn't work for me.

I also think it has to do with the fact that the stuff I'm reading now is more mature and adult, so even the later HP books felt a little childish for me.

Totally THIS.

I mean, it got so that I actually lost touch with canon WHILE IT WAS GOING ON because the second-to-last book was just so far from what I'd grown used to in fandom that I kept looking for the backbutton while reading it; never bothered with the last one.

And yeah, now that I'm older ... ... yeah, there's a precious few of the old awesome fanworks I'll revisit when I'm feeling nostalgic, and some awesome fandom friends that I still hang out with, but... the magic has died.

I'm sorry, OP. That really sucks. But, I think that just happens when you grow up. I still love HP (though I haven't reread it in a while), and I still think there are great fics being written out there. My (older) sister isn't really into HP anymore, which makes me sad, but as I've, too, gotten older I realize that age generally changes your perspective on things.

If you're inclined check out (https://www.reddit.com/r/HPfanfiction/). Maybe you'll find fic you like that will bring back the spark!

(Anonymous) 2015-09-13 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I was never super into the fandom, but I did worship them growing up and they meant a lot to me. Now I'm long overdue for a re-read and I keep putting it off for fear of this happening.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-13 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I kind of assume that most HP fans are more into each other/the fandom than the books or the films, as both are so completely inoffensive, unchallenging and mediocre. Or maybe Rowling's secret is she made her characters so bland that fans can pretty much endlessly impose whatever traits they want onto them.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-13 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to reread the books every year waiting for the next one. Once I got Deadly Hallows, the story was told, and I never wanted to read them ever again. I think it's better this way, I'll never have to find out if they hold up or not.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-13 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I really like her prose style. It's clear and funny.

But it's fine not to. Otherwise we'd have no need for so many different writers and there'd be no diversity in literature.

I was scared that this was going to happen to me but I've reread the series a couple times and Idk, it still holds up for me. I try not to expect too much of it.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-14 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Same here. The ending disappointed me a lot. I definitely loved the fandom because of the potential, and less because I adored all of the canon. And now my views have changed and things that didn't use to annoy me about the books do annoy me now.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-14 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
DH really killed my interest in HP and I haven't touched the books or the fandom since, but last year I went back and reread all the books.

They held up really well, and I enjoyed DH a bit better the second time around. The fandom, on the other hand... I've gone back to a lot of old fandoms over the years, but HP is the only fandom where rereading old favs was cringe-inducing for me. Nothing about it captured the magic of the books, imo.

I'm used to going back to an old fandom and thinking 'wow this fic is pretty bad. I definitely see these characters different now!' With HP it was more like 'OMG what the fuck is even happening here? That's supposed to be Ron? Since when does Dumbledore allow student/teacher relationships?! What's going on in this fic?!?!?!'

I kind of have my comings and goings with Harry Potter. I find I like re-reading the epic fics, and I do like the occasional new one that pops up. TBH though I've never really found the time to do a proper sit down and re-read of the series, mainly because of the shitty deal Harry gets in OotP.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-14 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
TBH, I never really got into the series at all, not even when it was huge. It has an interesting albeit not very original universe, but the writing is just... well, okay. Not fantastic, not terrible, just solidly mediocre. Some of the fanfic and writers blew me away, though. Sometimes that's how it is, a fandom transcends the canon.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-14 10:23 am (UTC)(link)
That calls growing up, anon. When you grow up, your taste change, or you have more experience and this is just not as good as others are for you. When I was a kid I adored many media that I can't stomach now, but they stil happened and they shaped who I am now. That's just how life is.

I feel the same, sort of, though I don't know if the books hold up as I've not reread them for years and never reread the last three. (Which means I read DH once, in the middle of the night, on the day of release. I only remember what happens because of the film.)

I still have so many good memories from the golden age of fandom and love some of the long fics that I wouldn't say I'd entirely fallen out of love though. The current Tumblr fandom seems to be mostly slating the movies or writing headcanons about what the Hogwarts wi-fi password would be so there's not much of interest there.
