Totally THIS.

I mean, it got so that I actually lost touch with canon WHILE IT WAS GOING ON because the second-to-last book was just so far from what I'd grown used to in fandom that I kept looking for the backbutton while reading it; never bothered with the last one.

And yeah, now that I'm older ... ... yeah, there's a precious few of the old awesome fanworks I'll revisit when I'm feeling nostalgic, and some awesome fandom friends that I still hang out with, but... the magic has died.

To be fair a lot of fic/meta at that point was better than what was going on. It did cause a lot of cognitive dissonance for fandom as a whole though.
