Yup. Player men are so overdone. Player women are not. Plus women spies (who aren't the sex objects in the movie but the hero and good at their job) are also not done often.

Canonically, there is a female James Bond: Vesper Lynd in the 1967 version of Casino Royale. Sure the movie is basically the result of many people taking an amount of cocaine suitable for a much larger number of people, but it's an actual Bond movie and she is codenamed 007 and considered one of the seven James Bonds.

She's referred to as James Bond at the end.

It's a very weird movie.

The first Casino Royale film is not really regarded as canonical:

It gets a category at the end, which it shares with the equally ignored Never Say Never Again. Totally different production company to the main line of films.
