- I preferred Angel and Torchwood's first seasons respectively for the same reason. There were some pretty dark episodes, but they didn't seem dark for the sake of being dark. They were just... dark.

- I liked Community season one. There, I said it. I liked the other seasons enough, but it was too meta for me to suspend disbelief.

The first season of "Community" is great. I think at worst, there might be a few episodes that could be called merely "good", if any.

I liked many of the meta/out there episodes, too-I liked seeing just how surreal the school could get and how creative and wild the show could be. But yeah, the simple, basic "everyday happenings at Greendale" ones are just as entertaining and hilarious, too.
