Depends on the character and the art. Some buff characters look great, some look ridiculous. (And that tends to vary from artist to artist.)

But my taste is pretty varied as well...I like muscles, both prominent and subtle.

^ This. Bulging muscles have their place (I can't imagine the Odinson being drawn without them), but other characters have different builds. Lee Garbett's art on Loki: Agent of Asgard was a great example. Thor? Muscles for days. Loki? Much leaner build. Even King Loki wasn't musclebound, though Odin was pretty huge, lmao.

Loki and Thor are good examples, yea! Loki should be leaner but still built. Thor not being musclebound would be unthinkable, lol.

Perhaps the American comic version. I imagine the original more as a stocky/sturdy fatty type.

I was thinking of the American comic version, yea. The original one being stocky works just fine!
