It's part of the reason I find reading comics hard. On the other hand, I'm always excited to see more buff guys in manga. Maybe because they're rarer and not as freaky? And those that are freaky are purposefully over the top?

Yeah, not really fond of them, either. At least with Iron Man I can tell myself it's just the armour. *g*

huge muscles being my turn off is why I'd rather read manga than comics

(in b4 someone misses the point of generalizations and spams this comment w/ muscled manga characters)

I'm a bit like that, though for me it's coupled with an appreciation for guys who are pretty rather than handsome. Manga is good with that.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-13 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I could put up with them being muscled more if the costumes weren't skin-tight. To quote MST3K, "I don't need to see every part of the human anatomy outlined in spandex! I can trust it's all there!"

(Anonymous) 2015-09-13 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I need this in males (oh, so much! Nipple heaven!), but boob socks for female superheroes? RAAAGE!

I'm the opposite. Skinny, young guys don't do it for me at all. Particularly the young part, though. Spiderman does nothing for me. I like a man with some muscle, and I find characters like Steve or Thor or Tony a thousand times more interesting than Peter.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-13 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but there's "muscular" and then there's "freak of fucking nature." If your muscles have muscles, then you just look ridiculous.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-14 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
It's never just "some muscle" though. A man would have to be permanently dehydrated to show ALL the muscles like that ALL the time.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-14 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
AGREED. Except I love Spidey.

It depends on the artist for me, some of them make buff dudes look fine while others make them too bulging with muscle. I'm good with either body-type though.

Welcome to the fundamental problem with "House Style." Both DC and Marvel do it and while I'm used to it, I very much prefer a more eclectic range of styles. Some DC examples would be: Karl Kerschl's Gotham Academy, Babs Tarr's Batgirl, Ben Templesmith's Gotham By Midnight, Cliff Chiang's Wonder Woman (swoon!), and to a lesser extent, Greg Capullo's Batman which feels like a more realistic DCAU.

Thank goodness we have a lot more styles around right now so there are many comics that don't give me that trouble. Trying to read 90s comics, on the other hand, feels like a constant assault on my eyes, no matter where I turn.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-13 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
That was me before I started reading comics. The overly buldging muscles put me off from picking them up cause I thought that's how they were ALL drawn. The 90's were a horrible period.

It's changed though and completely artist dependent. I've found artists have really moved away from EXTREME 90'S ART and have gotten better at proportions and slimming down heroes.

On DC, Green Lanterns (apart from Guy who is on the stockier side), Flash, and Batfamily characters and a number of second stringers have slimmed down considerably.

And on Marvel's side most X-men (besides snkit-bub), Spidey, Daredevil, Iron Man, and others are noticeably lanky or lack HUEG muscles and have somewhat plausible builds.

It's mostly Superman, Bane, Batman, sometimes Green Arrow, Captain America, Hulk, Thor, and Luke Cage who I mostly see fall into Dorito Build with hulking muscles and that's usually because of their builds and part of who they are.

But yeah, 90's art can be hard to read and it really can depend on the artist. Nowdays for me, its boob socks that are an instant no for me which still happens with disappointing frequency.

Ah yes, the boob socks are unfortunately still very present. Getting better though. I certainly see it less now than in the early 2000s.

Actually, this secret was probably written by a woman. I dislike it too but let's aim correctly.

Let me also be clear that it is fine and quite common for women to not be attracted to heavily muscled or hyper-masculine men. But this secret is somewhat body shaming.

Depends on the character and the art. Some buff characters look great, some look ridiculous. (And that tends to vary from artist to artist.)

But my taste is pretty varied as well...I like muscles, both prominent and subtle.

I had the feeling this was a mainstream opinion among ladies, assuming that's what you are.

I once saw a comic explaining it, that the muscle dudes are mostly a male power fantasy and the acrobat type bodies are more like what a lot of women find attractive.

Yeah, I'm more of a Nightcrawler fan and his body is partially the reason.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-14 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
We've all got our tastes in comic art.

I like them big and bulky but without each individual muscle being defined. I guess I like a bit of realism, like lots of muscles don't show up unless you're specifically flexing them, so it's off putting to me when a character's relaxed and has abs bursting out.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-14 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
God, Black Widow looks so waifish in that pic.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-14 10:32 am (UTC)(link)
Muscles are like boobs. None or too small, don't worry somebody like that. Enough to be believable, hmmm kay. Too much, OMG GET IT OUT OF MY FACE.

I'll take overbulging muscles over eternally standing up nipples any day.
