Astroturf/plastic grass. (Pettiness!)

Whyyyyyyy, it is dead stuff in a garden. Even if it is "neat". Especially when it's obvious the house that has it has a lot of money and resources to care for a lawn, and water is not short.

It's so tacky

There's a house ten min away from me that has a "lawn" full of fake grass, white rock, and wax "tulips" it is seriously the ugliest thing I can imagine doing to your lawn

I hate it and I live in Southern California, where subsidence from groundwater pumping is literally turning the entire state into a sinkhole, so i get why they do it. But it's hideous. I'd rather look at bare dirt. At least you can sprinkle wildflower seeds (California poppies, sweet alyssum, marigolds... something) on dirt and rake them in when/if it does rain. Like, I'm gonna enjoy watching people's astroturf get covered in debris/look like shit next to the lush grass and pretty flowers in other peoples' yards when the El Niño hits in earnest this fall. Ffs, just put rocks and gravel and maybe some cactus. Pave your yard with solar panels. I always secretly expect Barbie and Ken to come out of houses with astroturf lawns.

lol, I love it. If only the suckers were cheap.

I'm in a rental house with super ugly weedy gardens, and I've got a few packets of assorted wildflower seeds I'm going to scatter over them. If there was no lawn, I'd do it on that too. It's going to look fab, but not neat by any means.

I'm in SoCal too and more people need to look into arid landscaping tbh BUT I also don't get how everyone's let their lawns turn to such shit when the watering regulations are not that bad or impossible to work around, watering on once a week and keeping it longer and my lawn is still 100% green.

Watering restrictions depend on where you are. So does the weather. Ours is 5 minutes, 2 days a week, and it's been in the upper 90s for the last ~2 weeks. I do wish people would let their grass grow to 5 inches or so.
I haven't had a lawn for 10+ years, just flowers and fruit in good years and bare dirt and desperate fruit trees in bad.

Tbh? If I could do that with my mom's house, I'd be happy. then she wouldn't run the risk of dying of heat stroke/exhaustion when doing yard work. She doesn't have the money to hire people and we live further away from her, so...

And, I'm also a lazy fuck when it comes to outside work, so I'd LOVE to have a fake yard, but preferably one that looks a bit more...realistic than some I've seen.

Yeah, I get that not everyone wants to or is able to care for a lawn. It annoys me mostly in the cases where the gardens are ~perfect, and the astroturf is obviously supposed to look ~perfect too.

If I didn't have the energy, but the money to spend on making it different, instead of fake lawn, I'd probably turn the existing lawn into a field of wildflowers, or put woodchips down and some no-water native bushes.

That I could see, but the bad thing about doing that is that, if you live in a city, you have to deal with certain city ordinances and if said lawn is over run and not "cared" for, you can get slapped with fines. Even if poor areas, people try to make their lawns look somewhat presentable to keep the city off their backs, well, less than the city tends to anyway.

Also, with overgrown lawns, it's a haven for insects and, depending on where you live, mosquitoes and ticks and fleas can be a bad thing since they can carry lime disease, west nile, heartworms for pets, etc. Which is probably why some of the better off people do the astroturf thing or just hire lawn services.

Woodships would probably be teh best thing to do, honestly.

Maybe that's a US thing, since the ordinances for lawns thing is not a factor in Australia afaik, nor do people worry about too much vegetation carrying insects. (In the suburbs anyway, further out venomous snakes are an issue.) And yet still astroturf lawns are springing up here on the fanciest of houses like so many hideous weeds!

It is a US thing. Cause where I live, here in the South, we ALWAYS have issues with insects, mosquitoes being the biggest thing. Our climate is humid and hot and especially during the latter part of summer on into the fall, we get more rain on top of the heat, so it breeds the best, well, breeding grounds for them. So standing water and tall grass can be a major annoyance to us down here on top of the fact that we had had an outbreak of West Nile Virus back when I was in high school. And it persisted for a few years after. People got sick and we lost a good chunk of some of our bird populations, especially the Blue Jays.

So, well kept lawns or lawns that are fake help keep that down, along with the trucks that come out every year and spray mosquito and other pest deterrents in the neighborhoods.

It's why the city demands yards to be kept right, not to mention it'll make certain neighborhoods lose property values because they look kind of shitty.
