I read a book once called Son of the Mob. The main character is scrupulously lawful, and his family . . . well, isn't. Ultimately, he realizes that breaking the law and doing ethically questionable things is the only way he can protect them from the consequences of their actions, and everyone who's stayed connected to the family has had to do those things at least once. His decision is to leave his family rather than deal with those choices.
